Things Fall Apart (Everyman's Library)

Amazon.com Review

One of the most widely read novels from Nigeria's most famous novelist. Things Fall Apart is a gripping study of the problem of European colonialism in Africa. The story relates the cultural collision that occurs when Christian English missionaries arrive among the Ibos of Nigeria, bringing along their European ways of life and religion. In the novel, the Nigerian Okonkwo recognizes the cultural imperialism of the white men and tries to show his own people how their own society will fall apart if they exchange their own cultural core for that of the English.

One of the best books I've ever read, in my top five of all time, and I'm an English professor, so you know I've done some reading. I believe I read it in a matter of two or three hours the first time because I was desperate to know what was going to happen to Okonkwo and his kin with the invasion of European colonization. Do not be put off by what you may have heard about the violence and/or cruelty; there are a few parts where the content is a little rough, but the unflinching lack of sentimentalism - the matter-of-fact tone - makes the events tolerable. I teach a lot of folks who are older teens/early twenties, and honestly, I don't think this is a book that should be taught in high school or at the undergrad level because I think it actually helps to have some life behind you when you read it for the first time. If I knew in advance (which I never do) that I was going to have a class full of people over thirty, I would use it in a class without question. I would also say it's a must-read for men because of its powerful depictions of the conflicts between fathers, sons, and just male kinship relationships in general. Achebe also gives great insight into two strong powerful female characters, his second wife and one of his daughters, even though they have a minimal amount of page time.

In this deceptively slim and elegantly written book there are at least three stories. One is a story of traditional African village life and culture in full detail (including a glossary of African terms). This story begins late in the pre-colonial period, and occupies at least two-thirds of the book before moving almost imperceptibly into another story, that of the way in which the village people deal with the arrival of Christian missionaries and the eventual establishment of colonial authority (in this case, British). It is also a life story of Okonkwo, a traditional African warrior of that time and culture. As Okonkwo matures and moves through early adulthood, the reader learns about the events in his life that shape the man he eventually becomes. In one respect, this could be considered just another chapter in the tale of how Christianity served as seeming helpmate to European colonization of not only Africa but many natives of the New World. In this story, however, there are certain signs of early tolerance and attempts at mutual understanding. Later attitudes harden when the tolerant head of the local church is replaced by someone much more stiff-necked, setting in motion a train of events leading ultimately to tragedy. For a story so simply told and without any real complicated plot twists, there are lots of interesting things to think about. Suggestions:- The story seems short on details concerning the way in which colonial power is established—one day the whites are barely worth mentioning in marketplace chatter, and almost overnight, their presence seems to have changed almost everything. But perhaps this is exactly the way in which that story would be told from a villager’s perspective.- Tolerance is a major issue even today. Yet the villagers seemingly become victims of their own tolerant attitudes about the missionaries. If they had rejected them from the beginning, and had not allowed them to stay, things might have come out differently. By the time they recognized the destructive influence these beliefs had on their own lives, it was too late.- After a church burning, the colonial district commissioner gives village leaders a speech about the justice system the British have brought them. However, this justice system is not in evidence at that time; instead, what is visited on those leaders is summary “justice” by the commissioner, followed by corruption on the part of his henchman as their penalty is raised even further. An amazing little book with so much packed into it and so much to think about.

For a while I have wanted to write a review for this book, but I chickened out so many times because no matter what I write I will never be satisfied. This should show how important this book is to me as a Nigerian. I can no longer avoid the daunting task of reviewing it, but I'll be brief. It's part 1 of an epic tale by Chinua Achebe and it's fiction, but it's also historical. Lots of books have been written about colonisation in Nigeria but this is, by far, my favourite. I'll always be grateful to Achebe for writing this book in addition to others. I highly recommend it to all and may his precious soul continue to rest in peace.

Purchased the Kindle version of this book after clicking on a google Doddle for the Author on the occasion of his birthday. Although I considered myself well read, I had never hear of the author or this particular book. Of course most of my insights into literature is based on the European centric literary bias that exist in the U.S. education system.I am grateful for google for creating a doodle for a great writer that I was not previously exposed it. The book was an easy read, although the author is Nigerian, the book is narrated in British English. The book revolves around the life of local village leader in Nigeria inhabited by the Igbo people. The story dresses the effects and influence of British colonialism and Christian on the local population.I enjoyed reading this book. Better late then never!!!

I'm assuming that if one is looking at reviews of the Age of Reason, they already know what it is about, and are looking for information about whether *this* edition is a worthy candidate. So, let me say right up front: yes, it is. :-) This is an excellent version of this classic. Some may not know that Thomas Paine wrote at least part of the Age of Reason while in prison, imprisoned in France by the French revolutionaries. It is thought by some that he only escaped being executed because of a clerical error (the cell door sign marking him as bound for the guillotine being misplaced); he was released after James Monroe pulled some strings for him.Paine was a deist, and did not observe a particular doctrine or align himself with a particular church (the dictionary defines 'deist' as "A deist believes there is a God who created all things, but does not believe in His superintendence and government."). In the Age of Reason Paine makes the case *against* organized religion, and even the bible, arguing for a more rational explanation for the order of things, while still acknowledging the existence of a creator. For example, he says "The most extraordinary of all the things called miracles, related in the New Testament, is that of the devil flying away with Jesus Christ, and carrying him to the top of a high mountain, and to the top of the highest pinnacle of the temple, and showing him and promising to him all the kingdoms of the World. How happened it that he did not discover America, or is it only with kingdoms that his sooty highness has any interest?"Words sure to get the religious powers that were in a knot!In our current age, of unreasonableness to the extreme, especially religious unreasonableness and intolerance, we definitely need a bit more reason. The Age of Reason is as timely today as it was back when it was first released.

A brilliant work that reads almost like a modern piece of writing. The sheer scope of evidence offered as well as the arguments presented make this a must-read for anyone who seriously contemplates the role of religion and belief in our scoiety. I would suggest this as a must read for everyone preparing for a life in the religious sector - whether minister or priest or rabbi or imam. These are not necessarily individual arguments that need to be addressed (though they are pretty staggering as such); but taken as a whole, a truly "person of faith" needs to explain (to himself, if no one else) how these items Paine presents fit into the beliefs held so strongly.

A historical political treatise on government in general up to his era and especially in defining government wholly based upon the inherent rights of all men, the populace of an area to whom he refers to as a nation via a document i.e., a constitution, drafted not by any governing body but by representatives of the "nation" and ratified by the people who comprise the nation, which defines the authorities of and restrictions on the government said constitution authorizes. Mr. Paine espouses a seminal work necessary in the political arena but also writes a bit naively as to the application of the said system of government by not taking into account human nature. I do not believe a man can create any system that will systematically prevent man's desires for wealth and power to not come to fruition of any man-made system. While some system may be devised to prevent corruption via one man the same system, with a number of men who are just as corruptable within it, is prone to failing to achieve its high design. This scenario may be seen in the actual forms of the republican i.e, constitutional approach and the various Marxist's communist approach that exist today. In our American constitutional method offices exist today in a form that was not allowed for or, naively, expected by the drafters of our system. This is seen in the offices of Representatives and Senators who earn an annual salary, pension, and medical privileges. Originally, as is indicated in Mr. Paine's work and elsewhere, permanent office and amenities were a luxury afforded officers of a monarchy's court. In the American system, it was expected, though not defined in writing, which was a serious mistake, that representatives and Senators served of their own accord, yes, elected by the people, and only compensated for their expenses, not a substantial income. It was may also be seen that it was thought and expected, though not defined in writing, that representation in both houses would naturally rotate from citizen to citizen and not produce life-time political positions with a pension and full medical care. The position of president was the only office for which annual compensation was expected and allowed and even that position was not allowed or expected to receive any type of a pension. These are not the only alterations to the system initially devised. They are just some of the most obvious.A similar process occurred in the various applications of Marx's communist system, which in its present form operates almost identically to a monarchical government, creating some of the worst tyrannical dictatorial systems man has yet known. Of course, communist systems do not look like the opulent monarchical system but opulence is the only difference. In present-day communism there is just as much class structure as ever there was in any monarchical system of government. It is not the single man that must be prevented from exercising corruption, it is an alliance of men hell-bent on exercising corruption that must, somehow, be prevented in any ideological system man might create.

I'd read the book on pdf recently, total game changer for me, and because of how much I loved it I decided to have a hard copy of it. This print job is a mess, it looks like it was photocopied, typical photocopied dark pages, hard to read and hard to make any highlights. A total botched job.

For those who would love a good, thoughtful, intelligent and logical take on the Bible, this is a hoot to read. As someone who studies religion but doesn't have one to call her own, this book will provide hours of excellent, thoughtful prose. And a great deal of laughter.

Paine's Rights of Man offers many of his observations about the nature of freedom and government. It is largely a repudiation of Burke's divine right of Kings. Paine delves into painstaking detail on particulars of the English system of Monarchy and Paine's disdain of the Parliamentary system, both as to the deficiency of its representative system in the House of Commons and the tyranny and entitlement of the House of Lords. Numerous pages are devoted to now irrelevant analysis of taxes and expenditures that are quite boring and can be quickly scanned. Plenty of insights about the role of government and the Rights of Man permeate the early part of the book. Not my favorite of Paine's writings, there are frankly more fruitful books to read.

As a child, Laurel Snyder listened each year to the story of the Exodus as she sat at her family’s Seder table. She oftentimes wondered what it would be like to live during that time period. In this artistic and original book, Laurel offers her creative interpretation of living as a Jewish child during the time of Moses. Her rhyming verse provides a steady pace. Full-page acrylic paintings by Catia grace each page. The dark muted illustrations enhance the serious nature of the story. If you are looking for a different approach to Passover, this book is a wonderful option. It could be read together with David Adler’s The Passover Seder. Children could see how the same story could be seen from different points of view.

Gorgeous, evocative illustrations and a beautiful retelling of the story. My boys, 3 and almost 5, paid rapt attention. Not explicitly religious, which may be a pro or con depending on what you're looking for.

Excellent

I was very pleased with this poetic collaboration of word and picture -- particularly since so many children (even readers) "read" the pictures attentively when listening to a picture book. From a palpable sense of what it might have been like to be a child slave to the final moments of light, open space and dancing, for me this was an enormously powerful story of the experienced plagues, an escape, and new found freedom. The illustration on the back cover of the jacket could have been an underground railroad illustration which deftly connects the Biblical exodus with an American story. I purchased the book for use in our church's Storyteller Time which pairs a picture book with that Sunday's lectionary. I look forward to reading it to our 4 to 8 year old children, overheard by our middle school and adult helpers for whom it will also be meaningful.

Children love this book

I really enjoyed all the illustrations in this book. Great job!

"The Longest Night" is a good book, one that is not only for those in the Jewish tradition, but also for Christians who recognize their ancestry in the events of Passover and Exodus. The text is definately strengthened due to the lovely illustrations. I am wondering about the inclusion of the page about "wolves ran through the street, sniffing at our door for meat." What is the reference point in the book of Exodus for this detail? Can anyone make a suggestion?

Poetic and sensitive story of the plagues of Passover. Designed to appeal and be understood with some complexity by even very young children.

It's not all that often I give reviews on Amazon but I just had to comment on this amazing book. A wonderful resource for the homeschool parent or anybody with an avid interest in their child's learning. Full of unique and doable games, activities, crafts to aid in teaching your child. I could not put this down. Even once I read it, I have gone back time and again to re-read it to make sure I'm not forgetting about the many amazing ideas. Linda, thank you for making this book. It has been such a blessing to me as a teacher to my varied in ages children. I just had to tell you!!!

Here in Argentina it is not usual home schooling, therefore we have no literature about it. My daughter has recently moved to another state, I live in Buenos Aires, and she asked me to look for books dealing with this subject. I had not a better idea than contacting AMAZON! It was interesting for me too. I did not know anything about it. I am learning! I am 79 years old!.

Interesting find. I can be very creative but I felt like I was becoming limited on different "fun" at home learning activities we could do other than book and computer learning and arts and crafts and additional online activity finds. This is a great addition to our homeschool resources.

Linda Dobson is well known in homeschooling circles. She has written several books; she is invited to speak at homeschooling conferences; and she has been homeschooling her own children for years. Most of the books she has written are very targeted at the homeschooling market. The title of this book indicates the same trend, but the reality is this book is for any family who wants to help their children learn and understand more in their education. Her first chapter does focus homeschooling, as she talks about some key factors between public schools and homeschooling. She calls these the "school mind" and the "education mind." The "school mind" is more concerned about preserving the public school system than in educating the students. The "education mind" is focused on trying to help children learn. The rest of the book is a wonderful collection of ideas on how to help children learn, from reading, to math, to character building, to other facets of a children's education. This is a great resource for rainy days, for when a child is bored, or for when a student is struggling with a particular subject. If you are looking for ways to educate your children, this is a good book to have.

I just received this book a few days ago and I sat reading through some of the activities for a few hours last night, highlighting the ones I plan on using with my 5 year old son! I homeschool my kindergarten son and he's very energetic and typically balks at "traditional" teaching so I ordered this book on a hunt for some fresh ideas to use in our homeschool. A few of the ideas in this book are a little obvious, but creativity is not one of my personal gifts (lol) so i find this book extremely usefull. Not only are the ideas and activities great, but as a whole it is helping me to "think outside the box" with my son's education.

I can't say this is a bad book. GREAT ideas for smaller kids. Just not much I can use for my 7th grader that will interest her.

This book was one of the first books I read when we had pull our son out of kindergarten after 1 month. I was reading everything I could get my hands on and I kept coming back to this book. Now, after successfully homeschooling two children for two years, I'll be purchasing it because it is that good. Library only has one copy and it's out all the time..lol

Excellent book I learned about teaching teens. Thai it is important to let them learn independently and power points are important. The author Debra Bell is a special Lady who wrote a excellent book. I am happy she shared her knowledge with us. Thank you DebraBless you and your family and friends. With Love, Mary Lynn
