From the Inside Flap

e. These are the only options available on the planet Jeep. Centuries earlier, a deadly virus shattered the original colony, killing the men and forever altering the few surviving women. Now, generations after the colony has lost touch with the rest of humanity, a company arrives to exploit Jeep–and its forces find themselves fighting for their lives. Terrified of spreading the virus, the company abandons its employees, leaving them afraid and isolated from the natives. In the face of this crisis, anthropologist Marghe Taishan arrives to test a new vaccine. As she risks death to uncover the women’s biological secret, she finds that she, too, is changing–and realizes that not only has she found a home on Jeep, but that she alone carries the seeds of its destruction. . . . Ammonite is an unforgettable novel that questions the very meanings of gender and humanity. As readers share in Marghe’s journey through an alien world, they too embark on a parallel j

I don’t know how I missed this magical work when I was immersed in feminist sf many years ago. This is truly a classic and never hits a wrong one note. A planet of women with different climate, different ethnology, different foods and relationships. I found it mesmerising and could barely put it down. I loved it but won’t say more because of fear of disturbing the unfolding of the story.

I am a writer and former book editor, so I know good writing when I see it, and I see it here. Highly imaginative -- Nicola Griffith has created a vivid world in which to unfold this story of a woman's journey and self-discovery. My friend describes this book as belonging to the category of "anthropological sci fi." I would also describe it as an ever-deepening story of a woman's coming home to herself. I have been a Nicola Griffith fan since I discovered her novel Hild two years ago, and have wanted to read this ever since. I am so glad that I got around to it! Satisfied me in a deep way, like drinking from a narrative well -- both refreshes you, and imparts you with a deeper ineffable wisdom.

I just learned that word today. Gynocentric - adjective , entered on or concerned exclusively with women.I like gynocentric stories.I just woke up to Nicola Griffith last week. I saw a review for her new book Hild and that sounded right up my alley but I like to start at the beginning so I bought all of Ms Griffith's earlier books too. This first book is science fiction. The second book is science fiction/mainstream/lesbian. The third book is a scandinavian crime thriller. I haven't read the rest yet but Hild the new book is historical fiction. So this author does not like to pigeon holed.Anyways, Ammonite is approachable science fiction. You wouldn't have to be into women-centric books to like this but if you were into women-centric books you'll love this, whether you're a science fiction fan or not.Unlike Daughters Of A Coral Dawn, in Ammonite the planet of all women happens basically by accident. IMO, nothing in the book was anti-male.

After I read Nicola Griffith's "Hild", I simply had to read more of her books. This sci-fi story does an excellent job of painting a planet inhabited by space-traveling humans and one that only supports women, killing off all men with a virus. The "Company" is suitably anonymous and evil, and the main character, Marguerite Angelica Taishan is a strong and compelling heroine. The plot is well-defined, with overcoming hardships of all sorts, and the contrast of life in space stations with life on the planet "Jeep". The author keeps you absorbed and reading to the end. One can only hope there will be a sequel. Kudos to Nicola Griffith - an exciting author whose books I look forward to seeing more of.

Ursula LeGuin said in an interview once that she regretted having used the male pronoun in The Left Hand of Darkness because it did a disservice to women in science fiction. I pass no judgment, her work was a milestone in science fiction and gender issues.Griffith's Ammonite fills in that deficiency brilliantly. A planet of all women, none perfect, very few stereotypes. Some are kind, some are vicious. Written (much like LeGuin's works) from the perspective of an outsider that finds her own way in a society that is at first incomprehensible to her. There are perhaps a few cliches in the relationships that Marghe forms with the both the "real" natives and the "alien" women who have been there a few years, but these are cliches that actually work in a poetic manner.A fantastic read, somewhere between LeGuin's work and Margaret Atwood's.

Ammonite tells the story of Marghe, an anthropologist who goes on planet Jeep.Planet Jeep has a virus which kills all men and a significant percentage of the women as well.So the planet is a women-only society, both the Terran Company and the natives.I liked Marghe herself, the change she undergoes, and the trials she endures. I also liked the world building, which was very convincing. I didn't like most of the secondary characters, which were too shallow to be real, mainly the commander of the mirrors which was cardboard thick. I also thought the author used vocabulary out of a thesaurus (which is ok, as long as it doesnt feel like showoff, which it did). All in all - I enjoyed the book, it was a good read.

Griffith's novels are by definition mind-bending. They will make you think about things you had no idea you could even think about at all. She takes you to another world, literally. Ammonite is an amazing tale that gives queer women a story about themselves to read in an alternate universe that we might wish actually existed. This is a sci-fi novel must read that you won't be able to put down.

I must be one of the only readers of this award-winning book who hasn't loved it, judging by its many accolades. Griffiths is a great writer - that's undeniable - and I wanted to like this book more. However, I found the story slow going, and struggled to connect with the characters. I may well like Griffiths' other novels, judging by her style, but I wouldn't recommend this one.

Amazon.com Review

More to Explore Photo Credit: Matthias Clamer Photo Credit: Emily Shur Science…for Her! has finally combined two of your favorite things: your seventh grade science textbook and your Cosmo. This is obviously a book for the ladies, but one of America’s manliest men got his hands on it, and he has a few quandaries. Nick Offerman, author of Paddle Your Own Canoe, asks Megan Amram, author Science…for Her! all of the burning questions that are on your man’s mind. Will feminism be more of a threat after women learn of the powers of Science? If you know anything about brain science, you will know that this is impossible! The more a woman learns about one thing, the more she forgets about all other things. A woman's brain is actually only the approximate size of a teacup (standard British issue.) If she reads my book, she will forget everything she knows about so-called "feminism." I promise this is true, or my name isn't "Catalog Marzipan"! (I know so much about science that I can't remember my own name!) Is the feminine for “scientist”, “scientista”? There's no real translatable equivalent for "female scientist." The Inuit people called it "aqilokoq", which, loosely translated, means "snow." Who has better scientistas, Israel, Palestine, or Texas? I will go with Texas, but mostly because I don't know what those other words are! Are they flavors of Axe Bodyspray (hubby hubby, that's how I want my hubby to smell! That, and some Ben & Jerry's, yum!!!)? This isn't "Words...for Her!" Though that would be a great sequel! I'm going to put the "dick" in "dicktionary"! [sic] ;) Is there a sure fire method for locating the perineum, or “bridge of sighs”? I am handy with a tape measure. I just go with regular ol' female intuition on this one (which is how female surgeons find the pancreas, etc.) Think: where was the last place I left the perineum? Retrace your steps. Is it on your forehead? The perineum is always in the last place you look! Not really much about canoes in this book, but wouldn’t you say they are an important part of water science? Why the dis? Canoes are very important, but only applicable for men! A woman can't drive a normal car, due to her inborn lack of spatial reasoning and physics (discussed at length in the book) - how do you think she'd fare at canoes, the cars of the sea? She would get distracted by all the beautiful water lilies (Anthropologie-chic!) and crash into another canoe in order to create a "meet cute" with a hot, single doctor. There would be massive causalities. I am very proud of you, Nick, for using a canoe responsibly, but please, don't let any women NEAR them! Have you given any thought to tackling other traditionally difficult areas of study for Ladies, like emotional composure? Science is something women can learn, if they really put their (pint-sized!) mind to it. Emotional composure, on the other (petite!) hand, is unattainable. I, for (instance!) instance, am sobbing all over my keyboard right now as we speak because I remember that Hello Kitty doesn't have a mouth and got sad and horny at the same time. Itas gahggetting hadrsd tao tpye isn fancct. Okay, I've composed myself. I'm so sorry for that. I'm going to go eat chocolate.

I have to counter the extreme negative reviews here. This book is hysterically funny. Laugh out loud funny. Some people obviously don't get Ms. Anram's sense of humor and that's fine. Taste in comedy is subjective, see the career of Adam Sandler. NB: I'm told by someone who knows him from his stand-up days that he's a great guy and a wonderful friend but I have never laughed ONCE at his man-child humor. And Sandler is a multi-millionaire, so clearly there's room for disagreement here. But as the great Bette Midler once told me, eff 'em, if they can't take a joke. This is not misogyny as some claim, it is satire. Clearly, it flies WAY OVER the heads of the negative reviewers. Please don't let their very skewed comments put you off this hilarious book. Satire is not an endorsement of a point of view, as some here are saying. Don't listen to them! They are simply wrong. Buy this book! Now, I am not the target audience for this book as friends assure me I have a penis. But I have seen women in the wild and, occasionally, in captivity and I think any beautiful, intelligent woman will pee her pants laughing while reading this. That's not my opinion, it's a medical fact.

Bought this for my S.O. for Christmas and she loves it. I love it too - Megan's one of the best humorists working today.

The novelty wears off after a few pages. But she's a crazy funny lady.

The premise was excellent, many of the jokes were good, but the author wore it thin a few chapters in. Yeah, the girls with their tiny little girl-brains need big, complicated, man-science dumbed down for them in language they understand thing could have had so many variations, and the author used only a few ideas, and recycled them. I put it down after about thirty five pages. I was hoping for more sophisticated satire. I may pick it up again, in the hopes that the author was in a rut for a few chapters, and got inspired with another comedic premise/variation.

Bought this for my wife, heard her laughing and ended up reading most of it myself. A bit over the top, but nicely done.

Love it! Great book and very funny.

hilarious. absolutely hilarious. if you are good with sarcasm, this is definitely the book for you.

I have never written a review for anything before, on iTunes, Amazon, Yelp, whatever (that I can remember). Then I saw the travesty that is "Science...For Her!" having 3 out of 5 stars. Just know that someone giving this book 1 star is like an infallible litmus test for them being unfunny and lame. This book is hilarious and Megan Amram is great.

Review

“A smooth, expert, and often startling history that emphasizes that no behavior separates us from other animals, but we remain an utterly unique species.”—Kirkus Reviews “Rutherford’s entertaining work offers a refreshing and perspective-altering view of the complex history of life on Earth.”—Publishers Weekly “Rutherford is an engaging, witty writer. He is also a concise one. After several vast but worthy tomes about human nature that have been published recently, that makes this pithy homage to our species all the more welcome. An entertaining and blessedly succinct read.”—Guardian “A kind of intellectual enema, exposing the popular myths about human exceptionalism.”—New Scientist “Looking at the latest evidence from behavioral science, genetics, and paleoanthropology, Rutherford explores the ways that humans do differ from other animals and whether we are indeed as special as we once believed. . . . Recommended.”—Scientific American “I love learning new, surprising facts, the kind that make children say “Did you know?” Did you know there are Australian hawks who pick up burning sticks and transport them to start a fire, where they then eat roasted animals? . . . Highly stimulating, lots to think about, lots to learn. Very well-written. . . . Thoroughly recommended.”—Richard Dawkins “Fascinating. . . Enlightening. . . Rutherford writes with clarity, authority and humor. His research is thorough and so current that most readers will be wowed.”—Bookpage “An energetic exploration of the animal kingdom reveals what humans share with other creatures, and what makes us different.”—Shelf Awareness “Engaging, accessible, and highly recommended.”—Library Journal “[Rutherford] writes with intellectual authority and also, as a popular lecturer and broadcaster, expresses himself in a clear and persuasive manner with natural charm.”—Spectator “I loved this book. An outstandingly clear and witty account that shows beyond doubt how much we are part of the animal world, and yet at the same time how different we have become.”—Henry Marsh, author of Do No Harm   “This delightful and charming book will change the way you see yourself and your place in the natural world.”—Ed Yong, author of I Contain Multitudes   “Adam Rutherford is a master storyteller. [Humanimal] is packed to the brim with intriguing tales, clever twists, and up-to-the-minute scientific discoveries, offering a completely new perspective on who we are and how we came to be.”—Hannah Fry, author of Hello World   “Charming, compelling, and packed with information. I learned more about biology from this short book than I did from years of science lessons. Adam Rutherford has a knack for making complex ideas understandable—and also fun. Our species is a lot stranger than I’d ever realized, but a lot more normal, too. A weird and wonderful read.”—Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads   “I’ve learned more about myself and my species than I thought possible. A beautiful, compassionate book exploring not just human nature but also the human condition. I’m more in love with Adam Rutherford’s writing than ever.”—Angela Saini, author of Inferior   “If teaching is what makes humans special, then Adam Rutherford is superhuman—the paragon of teachers, a truly gifted transmitter of knowledge: lucid, enlightening, witty, and delightful.”—Kate Fox, co-director of the Social Issues Research Centre   “Adam Rutherford is a superb communicator who eruditely explores the borderlands of history, archaeology, genetics, and anthropology in this fascinating tour of our species.”—Dan Snow, host of the podcast Dan Snow’s History Hit “Adam Rutherford is a delightful, eclectic, hilarious, and often filthy guide to what we know about human genetics. But even more than that, there are parts of this book I wish were graven into the walls of public buildings and above the desk of anyone who writes about science. Next time someone tells you that men ’evolved’ to behave in one way while women ’evolved’ to behave differently, pull out your copy of Humanimal and set them right.”—Naomi Alderman, author of The Power

I loved this book. I wasn’t surprised, however, since I had read two other books by Adam Rutherford - “A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived” and “Creation” and had loved those as well. In this book, Rutherford makes the case that humans are animals and that many of the ways we behave is also seen in the animal world. Rutherford writes with a conversational tone and he makes the science completely accessible. Humanimals is well written and with the same sense of humor that Rutherford displayed in his other books. And again, the footnotes are worth reading.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley for review purposes.

Thank you to NetGalley, the Experiment, and Adam Rutherford for an ARC ebook copy to review. As always, an honest review from me.Like:- Opportunity to learn even more about evolution- Shows the specific genetics and behaviors that contribute to evolutionary change- Many visuals to help with understanding of the textLove:- Everyone can learn something from this book- Complex information that’s written in an easy to understand way. You don’t need a college degree in science to understand the informationDislike:- Not so much a dislike, but more of a warning- there’s chapters on sexual activity ( because how else are new animals and humans created) It goes in depth into various sexual activities, mating practices, and genital touching. So heads up, if you end up listening as an audiobook without headphones.Wish that: —Overall, a well written, comprehensive book about the step by step process of evolution. Written in an interesting easily accessible manner. I definitely recommend if you’re interested in the topic!

Evolutionary history and evolutionary biology are fascinating subjects, and in his latest book, Humanimal, author Adam Rutherford takes a look at what sets humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom, and asks if we are truly as unique as we have been led to believe. Broadly speaking he looks at a variety of behaviours that are often regarded as uniquely human , ranging from speech and communication , to art and the use of tools and even sex for pleasure rather than procreation and finds examples from around the globe that show similar behaviours in animal species that will surprise you. It is fascinating to read about species of birds in Australia who have learned to use fire as a tool to flush out prey, or dolphins who use sea sponges on their snouts as protection when hunting. Rutherford clearly and simply breaks down how the genetic similarities and differences between humans and other animals may be less than many would expect, but they are enough to make us vastly different.Although the subject of the book is vast and complex, Rutherford does a wonderful job in breaking it down, and making it not just accessible but also fascinating to the lay reader with no background in the topic.“We transmit information,” writes the author, “not just via DNA down the generations, but in every direction, to people with whom we have no immediate biological ties. We log our knowledge and experience, and share them. It is in the teaching of others, the shaping of culture, and the telling of stories, that we created ourselves.”I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Dr. Adam Rutherford's new book "Humanimal" is his ability to condense complex scientific jargon down into easily accessible, digestible and engaging text. This book is shorter than his previous work, ABHOEWEL (A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived), but that does not mean it is less informative or less palatable. The book itself is of high quality: the pages are smooth and textured, the font is easy on the eyes; the cover and binding are strong. The last chapter of the work - The Paragon of Animals - is very moving and worth the investment of both your money for the book and your time. In recent years, I've persuaded myself that allocating money towards a book is not a "purchase" - it is an investment. You can return to the books you buy again and again throughout your life, as often as you wish. This is a book I will return to again and again.A quick overview:Dr. Rutherford breaks the book down into two segments: Part One - Humans and Other Animals; Part Two - The Paragon of Animals. Humanimal is an excellent and concise overview of how Homo sapiens evolved, survived, progressed and achieved the levels of sociability and complexity that we have. In addition, the book, in its own way, offers an opportunity for reflection and humility of our place in the animal kingdom and contributes a great deal to my every growing and never satisfied interest of what it means to be a human, one of many before and long after I am gone. I highly recommend it and have already ordered another copy for a friend. Enjoy!

WHAT A MIND SWITCH !!! Though I have not totally conquered the pain in the posterior (which comes, they say from the back... I'd been to several doctors about the pain, went to physical therapy and that made it worse, actually. So this book was recommended to me by a very reliable friend so I'm trying the process. The physical therapist was throwing up his hands and doctors told me to rest it, use heat and take OTC pain pills. Then when those didn't work...here, have some narcotics. Well they made me sicker, darn it.So it is MIND OVER MATTER TIME! I put on my workout clothes and hit the trail. I talk to my brain a lot and I don't care if something thinks I'm nuts, I'm getting better and better! I'm not there yet but I know I'll make it. This has been going on for at least 4 years. I've only done this for about a month.Instead of going to bed with a heating pad I suit up and get moving. What a change from walking a block and having to sit down, sometimes with tears running down my cheeks... to walking a mile telling my brain to fix the ***blasted pain. Shoot, I even do weights, resistance, bike, etc.Thank you Dr. John Sarno, M.D. I feel like I'm living again...and get this, I'm over 70 years old.

This is what finally cured me of my back pain. I tried doctors, yoga, therapy, pilates, new chairs, pillows etc and the pain always eventually came back! finally finally I decided to try this (what can it hurt), and its genius! It took a while to fully implement but I knew right away he was onto something of substance and I now can say that I'm pain free for about a year - it's amazing!

You will be resistant at first. It at first seems like he is saying that all people with back pain are malingerers or have hypochondria. He isn’t! What he is saying is that physical pain is a consequence, not the cause of your back pain. Doctors are treating the consequence as if it’s the cause. The cause is what is known as ‘tension’. Think about it. You pickup a bag of groceries and your back hurts. So you go to the doctor and they treat the back. But the back never caused your pain. What caused the pain was the invisible tension between the back and your action. This tension happened because of psychological emotion. If you realize the cause is psychological not physical, the pain will evaporate. Typically our society looks down on people who experience tension, but support people who experience physical pain, so people won’t admit to feeling psychological tension. Once you do, your physical symptoms will resolve themselves and the psychological tension will reduce too.

The treatment in this book works.I first found this book when I washaving extreme leg and back pain. His Treatment works, IF you work itfaithfully and it is TMS, you will bepain free. For me it took between threeand four weeks and the nine monthand thousands of doctor bill and medsthat did NO good...I was pain free.I still have the book and whenever Ifeel any kind of peculiar discomfort,I grab it off of my shelf and refreshwith the treatment. All of Dr John Sarno's books andteachings are amazing. This book was for my boss whehas been suffering from much backand leg pain. The doctors can notfind anything and the medicationsthey've prescribed do not help.

I bought this copy for a friend. She started to read the first chapter and started to feel her back get better! I had a horrible back spasm 25 years ago that was healed just by reading this book. Is it for everybody? Not necessarily. If tension is making your back ache, or you have a backache and tension in your life, why not read a paperback book to see if it helps? If it doesn't help, you're out less than $10. If it does help, it can save you from years of potentially addicting pain medications and having to have back surgery. No, it isn't "all in your head"--it's in your back. But what's in your life could be causing your back to hurt. Why not give it a try?

I think Dr. Sarno is a bloody genius! I've had lifeolong bouts with low back pain, the last one lasting far too long until today (1.5 yrs) and being far too excruciating (along with neck involvement) -- none of which bouts showed any structural defect! It is completely clear to me now, that my back pain has been caused by my brain, tho triggered in every instance by some physical incident that should have been easily resolved in weeks or a few months at most. Since reading this book, plus The Divided Mind (where he gives you a step-by-step process to follow to get your brain to let go of the false messaging), I have dropped about 50% of my pain in 3 weeks. Amazing! I follow his program religiously every day -- but I also swim three times a week in a warm rehab pool, walk five days a week (1.5 miles), do back stretches and strenghtening 5 nights a week plus arm bands 3 days a week, and see my Alexander Technique teacher twice a month to learn better posture and stress relief techniques.. Sarno's program doesn't mean we don't have to exercise moderately and sanely, or don't have to eat nutritionally and well! We all know that! Sarno adds the final key element for me, to the advice and how-tos for "living a long but healthy lifestyle", a loosely-goosey phrase much bandied about these days.

Easy to read. Only thing it does not show pages . it shows time.

I needed Alcestis and Medea out of this book with line numbers, so this met my needs well. Thank you Amazon customer support for helping me find this as well.

Although these stories were written centuries ago, they still apply today. All of them draw you in, and my personal favorite is Medea!

It was just okay.

Boring needed for class

The book was exactly what was advertised.

Wild Coast: Travels on South America's Untamed Edge, by John Gimlette

Review

“To the admirably (or alarmingly) fearless Gimlette, the Guianas remain a terrain of matchless allure . . . He has written a spirited historical, political and personal travelogue guaranteed to arouse the adventurous reader’s wanderlust . . . It offers a gorgeously vivid depiction of one of the last untamed places on the planet.”—New York Times Book Review “An engaging odyssey . . . Gimlette shows the region to be endlessly fascinating, if often in a dark way, [and] summarizes sweeps of history with a quinine-dry wit . . . His books manage the neat trick of making the globe feel supremely vast and mysterious once again. He does this in part by writing a narrative that sounds as if it had been penned by an Edwardian explorer—you can almost envision his pith helmet—but also by crafting a superb travelers’ tale in which yesterday has far more ballast and heft than the fleeting happenings of today.”—Wall Street Journal“Wild Coast is the best kind of travel writing: tough-minded and humorous, but above all thoughtful.”—Times Literary Supplement (UK)“Wild Coast is funny, intelligent, revelatory.”—Joseph O’Neill, author of Netherland“Gimlette’s first South American travel book, At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig, captured with great wit and learning the quirkiness of Paraguay. He has now produced a no less remarkable portrait of the highly idiosyncratic countries known collectively as Guiana . . . Wild Coast is driven by extraordinary dedication, an insatiable curiosity in everything, and an enormous empathy for other people. Gimlette’s descriptions of landscapes are often hauntingly beautiful, his sense of humour is engagingly dead-pan . . . His book is also characterised by a thoroughness of research that puts most travel writers to shame . . . In lesser hands, such richness of texture and abundance of learning might have led to indigestion on the reader’s part. But Gimlette manages to steer through all the material with a great lightness of touch, skillfully weaving the personal narrative into a lucid and lively account of a multi-cultural history . . . Particularly memorable are his incisive portraits of the many crazed, tragic, and eccentric figures associated with these lands . . . All in all, Wild Coast is a reminder not just of the magnificent and endless strangeness of South America, but also of the way in which travel literature can still fulfil its role of bringing to life some of the world’s unjustly neglected corners.”—The Spectator (UK)“A completely fascinating book. It opens up a forgotten corner of the world with tremendous flair and shrewd observation.” —William Boyd, author of Any Human Heart“A wonderfully entertaining account of a journey through one of the world’s least-known places . . . Gimlette, an insatiably curious storyteller, revels in the strange mix of people and traditions . . . Amid vivid descriptions of torrential rivers and golden grasslands that are home to some of the planets’ largest ants, otters, and fish, the author recalls encounters with a stunning variety of intriguing characters . . . Colorful and immensely readable.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred) “A few pages into his excellent new book, Wild Coast, John Gimlette tries to convey the forbiddingly impenetrable nature of his subject, the Guianas of northeastern South America, a nettlesome tangle of swamp, lowlands, crisscrossing creeks and rivers so resistant to navigation or settlement that the landscape remains one of the wildest, most unknown territories on the globe . . . These are words to quicken the pulse of the armchair traveler, for whom no landscape resonates quite like the exotic, the hard to get to, the uncharted . . . Between cellphones, Google Earth, and jumbo jets, it seems there’s nowhere in the world left to explore, but [writers like] John Gimlette prove that travel books still have something to tell us.”—The Daily Beast “The pages provide a rollicking, witty and informed account of what crawls out of the Guianas’ jungles into the author’s path. Armed with a rucksack and a keen sense of the absurd, Gimlette drives, flies and floats through Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana . . . The author has an uncanny ability to nail down his characters with a few well-chosen words . . . But the book’s real strength lies not in the living, but the dead . . . Gimlette brings history to life. He artfully merges assiduous research with a storyteller’s gift, presenting the reader with a catalogue of loveable rogues, inveterate explorers, eccentric naturalists, and idealistic romantics. These stories provide more than just a good yarn. They offer a door into the darker aspects of the Guianas’ past—and thereby a window on to much of the present.”—The Guardian (UK) “Gimlette leads us where few Europeans venture, beating a path through the jungle to find the juiciest tidbits of Guiana’s myth and history . . . This is a meaty and unusual travelogue.”—Associated Press

i've read all of Gimlette's books and they all enlighten and entertain.these are not 'travel' books in the traditional sense. you won't learn about how to get cheap flights or hotels but you will learn plenty about local history and people, good and bad. in 'Wild Coast', i learned about the complex (and ultimately tragic) history of slavery, Amerindians and European colonists of three small south american countries:Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.Gimlette travels deep into the interior where not even the locals want to go. he follows the paths of earlier explorers but brings history right up to the present and its lasting impacts. of course, there are historical figures but also present day characters, and they are all colorful real people. the land (along with its flora and myriad crawlies) is described in detail and let me admit that it did not inspire me to go there. Gimlette has surely taken me to those places. it was a wild ride which in fact completed just a couple of days ago.

After reading the blurbs on the back cover and inside jacket, one would assume that this is a tale of high adventure and exciting exploits, sprinkled with wit and humor...not quite. The author's intent and gutsy undertakings are to be commended but the redundant theme of gruesome atrocities and brutalities wears away on the reader. These were horrific acts of human nature and we should be aware of these butcheries and bloodbaths on both sides of the slavery issue, but again, this subject matter is overdone.Taken as a whole, it is a good history of a land few dare to venture but do not expect thrilling, attention-grabbing content.

Interesting description of Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana. Author spends most of his time in Guyana. Particularly interesting account of the Jones Massacre. Likewise Devils Island in French /Guiana. The author's main thrust is recounting historical events which occurred in the various countries, visiting the actual sites and gaining information from the locals. This proved to be somewhat repetitive at times. Nonetheless an enlightening look at a little known area of the planet

Gimlette took me to three places I had not even dreamed of before. Yes, we've all heard of the strange South American jungles, and read a little about them in books like "Fordlandia." But we've yet to meet the strange people who prowl those dark, fusty places.Gimlette changes that. Colonizers, slaves, tribe members, some wacky adventurers -- they are fully introduced and explain how these three countries remain as mysterious as they were hundreds of years ago. And by adding details of his own travels, Gimlette shows you what a trip to the dark side would be like today. I, for one, was glad to read about it, although being alongside him as he tread through the underbrush is not the way I'd like to spend my summer vacation. It's a great read, especially in light of today's news of the quest for oil off the South American coast. History could definitely repeat itself. Read "Wild Coast" and you'll see what I mean.

A remarkable book of history and travel exploration in the three least-known countries of South America. Astonishing history. Astonishing places. Great writing.

John Gimlette's an intrepid explorer, heading off to forgotten parts of the world to inspect them in detail. He's written a great book about Paraguay, and now tackles an even less visited corner, the Guyanas and Suriname. While he makes some parts of these countries sound interesting and, perhaps, intriguing, they don't come across as inviting - and so his travels, and the book that's come from it, lets us learn from and vicariously experience his travel from the comfort of home - a good book for the armchair traveller.

I like this book. Some parts, I love 'em! Yet, it is not a perfect book, and I believe that he author enjoys picturing these lands in a darker way than they really are. I love they way the author describes the cities, the villages, and the land. I love how he creatively depicts all the characters he encounters along the way - a mixture of thieves, scums, workers, politicians that seem to blend all together in these three countries. I also loved the research done by the author before travelling to these countries, telling us a lot about the history and the "why" things are what they are today.Yet, as an anthropologist I feel that sometimes he over-simplistically tries to judge what people do. And he has a negative outlook that makes these people look more like damned souls than normal people. He seems to deny these people the opportunity to be happy and to actually enjoy their lifestyle - perhaps all the people he met had problems? Also, I can see his interest in describing everything negatively from the use of adjectives (dark, ghostly, haunted) that he often uses even for describing the pristine rain forest. But, you know, everyone has his/her biases, and they certainly don't spoil the enjoyment out of what is a welcome addition to the (poor) collection of books on Guayana, Suriname, and French Guyana. If you like travel literature, you will enjoy this book.

I purchased this book as research for a two week trip to Guyana and Suriname I just returned from. The author had me staying up late and reading through the night. I loved this book. I can't wait to get his other books. This book is totally worth reading, even if you're not traveling to the wild coast.
