In Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein “deals with the problems of philosophy and shows … that the method of formulating these problems rests on the misunderstanding of the logic of our language.”Hence, the author demonstrates that the solution to most philosophic problems becomes a critical method of linguistic analysis.Tractatus begins with ontology and the state of affairs of the world is described. From there the book deals largely with the question of how language works and how it can describe the world accurately. Many forms of language (e.g. names and propositions) reflect different objective parts of reality (e.g. objects and facts). Logic is then discussed as it pertains to tautologies, contradictions and propositions. From this claim stems the conclusion that that the laws of science are not logical “laws,” but a means that we use to express reality—hence, science does not in fact explain our world but merely describes it.Although the author embraces logic, he ironically ventures into the mystical on many occasions. Some of such highlights of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus include the proposal that most philosophical propositions are senseless (4.003), the relativity of “free” will and the lack of inner necessity of causality (5.1362), and the inability to recognize either the truth or falsehood from non-logical propositions. Wittgenstein brilliantly elaborates on widely accepted, yet wholly non-certain, everyday happenings (6.363II to 6.372) and clarifies that all ethics is transcendental (6.42I). In effect, the author posits that morality is in fact objective because subjective morality stems from happenstance, and is therefore meaningless.All potential readers should be acutely aware that this book is a very, very tough read. You may find yourself taking several minutes to read through one short page and then several hours to digest what it is you in fact just read. Either way, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a terse, powerful, enigmatic and notable in its ability to whisk the dormant imagination into shape. The intellectual ramifications of being able to fully grasp and comprehend the material are limitless.

Amazing read, and recommendable. Wittgenstein tried to spell out precisely what a logically constructed language can (and cannot) be used to say. Its seven basic propositions simply state that language, thought, and reality share a common structure, fully expressible in logical terms.On Wittgenstein's view, the world consists entirely of facts. (Tractatus 1.1) Human beings are aware of the facts by virtue of our mental representations or thoughts, which are most fruitfully understood as picturing the way things are. (Tractatus 2.1) These thoughts are, in turn, expressed in propostitions, whose form indicates the position of these facts within the nature of reality as a whole and whose content presents the truth-conditions under which they correspond to that reality. (Tractatus 4) Everything that is true—that is, all the facts that constitute the world—can in principle be expressed by atomic sentences. Imagine a comprehensive list of all the true sentences. They would picture all of the facts there are, and this would be an adequate representation of the world as a whole. Tractatus, however, not only provides a way to structure our knowledge about the world, but also provokes to develop a critical contradiction with a non-factual or emotioanl sphere of human nature.

I consider this book to be very worth reading because it is associated with an extremely important period in philosophy following the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. I found it to be very opaque. Wittgenstein seemed to be struggling with ideas he encountered while considering the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. The preface by Russell showed that he considered the work to be very significant. I intend to study more about this, and will probably revise this review later. For now, I would recommend reading the Tractatus, but I did not understand it very well.I think that a primary aim of Wittgenstein in the Tractatus was to address Russell's paradox and other problems of the "language" of logic, as being developed by Frege, Russell and Whitehead at that time. This led him into deep waters with respect to the mysteries of language, and a seeming necessity to set limits, even if these limits were somewhat arbitrary. Certainly some of his insights in this regard were highly penetrating. In particular, he viewed transgressing limits where truth could be adequately assessed as entering a realm of nonsense. I feel that had Gödel's work been available at the time, Wittgenstein might have thought somewhat differently about the limits he perceived. On the other hand, Wittgenstein ignored this work later in the more mature phases of his thinking. I came away from the Tractatus feeling that while it is still of great importance, especially as it was at a historical nexus in the evolution of logic, and displays some profound insights, time has somewhat passed it by.

This appears to be the product of a poor scan and OCR. There are multiple typos per page. Why does this matter more than usual? It's Wittgentein, and he was all about how ideas can and cannot be expressed in language. By introducing errors like this, it renders it almost unreadable.

One of the most influential books of the first half of the twentieth century and alongside Philosophical Investigations sets the standard for analytical philosophy's immense influence on modern theory. Wittgenstein basically demolishes metaphysical pretensions that derive from the reification of language.

I really enjoy reading Paul David Tripp's books. He challenges me to think on a deeper level. I am a mental health counselor and as I read his books, It feels like he understands the struggles of mankind. It is obvious he has been with people in their darkest times and he knows where true hope can be found. He helps give hope to the reader that while life can be difficult, our only hope is in Jesus. Focusing on eternity, helps the reader to refocus on what is truly important. In a world where "self" is promoted and seeing the eternal perspective is not promoted, Dr. Tripp points us back to what truly matters.

If you have ever asked yourself questions like: Why is it so hard to find satisfaction? Why is it so hard to find a good relationship? Why do I keep getting myself more and more into deeper debt? Why does it seem like life keeps getting more difficult? Why am I suffering so much? And many other questions like these - than this is a fantastic book for you.Paul Tripp writes with theological acumen, numerous biblical examples, brilliant illustrations, and practical insights in showing how we were made for eternity and that we need to factor in our lives the fall and the future in order to live in the now. Our current life is simply preparation for our ultimate destination. He shows how we typically view current realities without an eternal perspective and how devastating these consequences are and then shows on the flip side how we were designed to live with Christ at the center of all of life and how living with a forever mindset has gracious overtones leading to great peace and joy.Tripp delineates specifically how having an eternal mindset makes a substantial difference in our lives in our relationship to God, those closest to us, at work, in our priorities, etc.I highly recommend this book as "must" reading and an excellent choice to give as a gift to those who are disillusioned, deceived, discouraged, and without hope in this life. The gospel is clearly articulated here over and over in masterful brilliance shows how Christ is our only satisfaction in the now and how all our dreams will be satisfied in eternity through a personal relationship with Him.

I have purchased 4 copies of this book and have a copy on my Kindle. I meant for my friends to pass this book around, however, everyone is keeping the book for themselves. It is a book meant to be read over and over again so that the sweet truth of "forever" sinks in and fills you up. In writing this book, Paul Tripp has come up with a jewel of a read. Eternity amnesia, as Dr. Tripp calls it, strips people of hope. When we look at the situations in which we find ourselves, many times we are inclined to lose hope, sometimes lots of it. But when you look again at the situation with fresh eyes, in light of "forever", we realize that what we are going through is a "light, momentary, affliction". Ahhh, what a breath of freshness and sweetness that we find when "forever" is ever before us. Don't just buy one copy. Spread this book around. Don't worry, you won't get it back, but you will have bestowed a marvelous gift full of refreshment and hope to whomever you choose to give it. And keep a copy for yourself. You will want to read it again and again. It will change how you look at life.

Exactly what I needed to read at this moment. I'm so thankful for God's redeeming and transforming grace as he leads me to live in forever here and now. Thanks for reminding me!

I really appreciated the author's emphasis on eternity and the importance that it plays in our every day lives. We were created to live forever with God and our sin messed that up, but that didn't negate the yearning that we still have to spend eternity with Him, and nothing here on this earth can satisfy that yearning. Only "looking for that blessed hope" will bring true joy and contentment until that hope comes to fruition.

Awesome book!!! I'm very discerning when reading Christian books. Doing this with ladies for a Bible Study. We're really enjoying this one. I did his Age of Opportunity years ago and Highly Recommend!!!!

This touches two fascinating subjects--wax sculpture as an art form, and anatomy books as a source of scientific information and cheap thrills. The first deserves more respect than it generally gets; Madame Tussaud's is barely the tip of the iceberg. The second is treated here mainly as a means to guilty voyeurism. (You will hardly learn anything about anatomy from this book, but the images of chopped-up women are jolting.) The book gives a nice coverage of the history of wax and anatomical art. Some features of the production did not appeal to me: Entire pages are devoted to boldface quotations, with legends too tiny for the human eye to decipher. (The first time I read the book, I didn't even notice the legends at all.) There is a wealth of historical photographs, but many are printed so small (commemorative postage stamp size) and at such low resolution that some of the history contained therein is lost. For an art book, try Alessandro Riva's book on Clemente Susini, which is stunning. ISBN 978-8889188972

Beautiful book, great shipping.

This is another beautiful book from Joanna Ebenstein and the Morbid Anatomy Museum.The book itself is well designed, well made, and includes nice touches like headbands.The photos and illustrations are of intriguing anatomical models that were widely used before the advent of photography. The detail on some of the models is astounding. Some of the models even include detail of the lymphatic system which is usually, even to this day, ignored.I was especially surprised to see a photo of a painting depicting the sculptor Jean Léon Gérome creating my favorite statue, Tanagra.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in medicine, anatomy, physiology, curiosities, art, etc.

Strangely delightful, The Anatomical Venus throws some light on what some may perceive as the darker corners of the boundary between science and popular culture.

I only give this three stars because I bought the ebook version and it's basically unreadable. Can't really zoom too well or view the images in the desktop reader, can't download it as a pdf to actually be able to inspect closely.

It's a bathroom book. It lacks depth.

Fascinating and beautiful book with superb pictures, but does not get a five star rating because the licture captions are so small I need a magnifying glass to read them, and even then some that are printed white on black are extremely difficult to decifer.

Modelling the genesis and propagation of electrical activity in the heart in quantitative terms is one of the most important recent applications of mathematical modelling in biology. The main research direction, and the most important for biological and medical applications, is the development of realistic models of electrical activity in cardiac tissue and the whole mammalian heart. Recent progress in nonlinear dynamics, advances in computer technology and experiments on cardiac tissue have made feasible the construction of such models. Computational Biology of the Heart is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of recent research together with a systematic overview of the subject. The contributions, all written by experts in the different areas of the subject, cover all main aspects of whole heart modelling: from excitation in single cells, to two and three dimensional models of cardiac tissue and the whole heart. Various computational models and techniques are described and then applied to reconstruct and visualise modelled activity in both normal and pathological heart tissues. The models are nonlinear and use techniques of ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and eikonal equations. The book also provides a review of modelling cardiac contraction, mapping electrical activity from electrocardiograms, and recent experimental observations of wave propagation in the whole heart. John Tradescant, gardener to the aristocracy, is a different type of protagonist from those Philipa Gregory usually places at the centre of her work. In her historical sagas such as 'The White Queen' and 'The Red Queen' and her Tudor works, women and gender relations are centre stage. In 'Earthly Joys' women's position is not neglected, but we are drawn into the life of a man whose loyalty to his master and a hierarchial way of looking at the world are examined.The novel did not resonate with me as immediately as Gregory's female centred works. However, Tradescant's period with William Cecil introduces the reader to the political wisdom of Cecil and Tradescant's own views as well as the development of Cecil's garden and, even his need to concur with his master, the king, when forced to relinquish his estate. With Cecil's death Tradescant acquires a very different type of master, and Gregory explores this period with with great sensitivity. Tradescant's last master, the king, comes into his life when he is beginning to question his adherance to hierarchy, echoing some of the views of his son, J.Elizabeth and Jane Tradescant, wives to John and J, present alternative views to John, and the usual feminist strand of Gregory's works is drawn through Frances, his grand daughter.The Kindle version of the novel suffers from poor editing. I is often used instead of J for John's son and this is disconcerting. However, despite this flaw, I was keen to read to the end and to reconsider my initial reluctance to become embroiled in a man's life instead of those of the female protagonists so familiar in Gregory's novels.

Describes the Stuart monarchs through the eyes of a landscaper. Not comfortable with the descriptions of the homosexual activities, but did learn some things about George Villiers, King James, King Charles I, and other notables of that time

I love Phillippa Gregory, but I did not like this book. She introduced an entirely unhistorical sexual preference for the major charcter that was conjecture only. Without the unnecessary fiction, it was an interesting book

Tremendously enjoyable. Great to read Philippa Gregory with a male central character. Her knowledge of gardening, the history of garden styles in Europe and their evolution as the culture changes are marvelous. Rich characters and, as usual, awesome detail and style. Really excellent book. Read it.

What a great read. Loved it and bought as gift for Mom Christmas

Read in conjunction with Virgin Earth. A story of life during these times Cromwell/Charles, through the eyes of Royal gardeners, their trials and tribulations and struggle to remain loyal to the Court at the same time remaining true to their own values. Most enjoyable read. Their deep love and understanding of plants is the backbone of these two books.

I always have trouble with historical fiction because I like to know what is fact and what is fiction. Consequently, I hauled out books of the his History of England during the reigns of George the First and his son Charles and lo and behold fact and fiction matched. Even the main character, whom I had considered fictional, turned out to be the real gardener to those in power--in fact there are flowers named after him. So...history became more real to me thanks to Philippa Gregory's engaging fiction.
