It is a shame that the private sector's role in the way governments are corrupted or operate is not discussed at length. the lager international contractors, the mining and oil sector practices concerning tax avoidance, environmental regulation, labor laws, or the weapons markes, their arms sales, etc are not discussed, but a good book for the subject any way.

This book is just the best study about corruption ever made in Law and Economic literature. When I bought the second edition I thought that I have made a great mistake. But, fortunately, I were wrong. This second edition presents a complete new abroach about corruption. I really recommend reading this book in order to understand the complexity of corruption.

This is one of the few books I've read where I felt severely agitated every time I had to put it down to do tasks. I'd race through whatever needed to be done just so I could sit back down and read this book some more and it took me a considerably short amount of time to read this book because I was so captivated with it.Philip Carlo most certainly did his research on Richard Ramirez from birth - including his family, the ones affected by his evil deeds and the ones who were also involved in the case. I was pleasantly surprised by just how thorough this book was. I'd rate the book 4 and a half stars if I could, simply because of overlooked grammatic errors.I find it shameful that Richard Ramirez wasted his good looks by taking a life of crime and hurting many people. He could've made an otherwise normal, SANE person very happy.

This book will provide the reader with an array of facts in which this case was built against one of the most notorious serial killers in California of modern times. Furthermore an examination into the view of Richard Ramirez, which has been depicted as macabre, coupled with his devotion to Satanism, which served as a pivotal factor into his brutal terrorizing of California for approximately 18 months during the mid eighties. A truly can't miss for any true crime reader, or someone of whom is not familiar with this particular case in our modern American history.

I have been an avid reader (mosty of the True Crime genre) for many years. I enjoy wandering into the realm and dangerousness of crime and criminals without the exposure. Having had read many other stories about famed serial killers, I knew that when I saw this book that I had to read it. Prior to discovering this book, I had only basic knowledge of the crimes of Richard Ramirez through criminal documentaries or television programs. I must say, I am overwhelmed. This book is probably THE BEST book on crime/criminality that I have ever read! It goes through every facet of the story to be told, the background history on Ramirez, the accounts from the detectives' perspectives, and the fear and reign of terror were quite palpable. I admit that this book scared me and left me with some residual emotional scars that only a good book can-- For instance, I am now a compulsive lock-checker and I have started making sure that I am able to thwart an attack of similar magnitude by leaving myself random items that can be used as weapons and/or ways to know if someone is skulking around my home. It's not paranoia...it's considering what most people do not want to consider--that they may become victims at some point. I am sure that the families impacted by the Night Stalker never imagined that when they went to bed that their entire safety and security would be imposed upon...in their own homes. I digress...The book is superb! From learning about what could have possibly set this into motion within Ramirez's youth and learning how "normal" and well-versed he could also be is just another facet of why he was so bone-chilling and terrifying. Phillip Carlo did an excellent job on the research, on the writing, on the many things that make this book such an excellent account of the Night Stalker crimes. It quickly has become top-brass to me & ranks right up there with the best: Ann Rule, Truman Capote, Vincent Bugliosi. Fascinating read!

This wasn’t the book I was expecting. It’s confusing because there are apparently two similar books by the same author, but they have different information in them.

Excellent book! A good read for those of you who like to read true crime stories. This book is a true account of the notorious "Night Stalker" know as Richard Ramirez, a Satan-worshiping heartless killer who racked-up one of the highest body counts in California history. The book details Richard's killing spree, crime by crime, then takes you through the capture, trial, and conviction of this psychopath.This book does not contain crime scene photos that include the victims, but does show some of the interior of the houses in which the crimes were committed. This is a good thing for those of you who do not want to be subject to gore. Photos include Richard Ramirez at the trial, including some photos of the police and lawyers involved with the capture and conviction.

This is a well researched true account of the "Nightstalker" killings, rapes and tortures Richard Ramirez visited upon Southern California in the mid 80s. It is a terrifying book and pulls no punches with the crimes and their aftermaths. The trial portion of the book is a testament of just how broken our judicial system is with the proceedings lasting over 4 years.The story comes at you from all angles, the victims, the killer and, the detectives who sought the bloodthirsty Ramirez for months. For true crime buffs, it's an excellent offering and one which now, that it's in my library, will be listened to again.

Very intense and frightening account of a sick and twisted "thing." I was in that area when he was active!!! R.R. was a true monster and devil. Well written - I could not put it down.

I've read many books about Richard Ramirez & this is the best. I still feel his cousin was involved with some of the murders, especially with children.

I’m truly sorry that you will never experience the joy of cooking from scratch. And that’s ok, although I must wonder why a person who prefers prepared and frozen foods would buy a cookbook at all. And even more perplexing is the fact that you would write a negative and unkind review for this creative chef….. simply because you don’t like to cook with real ingredients.As for your comment on doing “more damage to the cause of veganism than good”, Bunnymom, what exactly is “the cause of veganism” if not practicing the enjoyment of plant foods, whether prepared, frozen or freshly crafted? Smile on your sisters, Bunnymom. We are all striving for first-rate nutrition and there is surely more than one way to skin an avocado.

So happy to finally have this book. I already knew from Sam's blog that her simple no-fuss recipes were amazingly delicious. It's nice to see this book lives up to the expectations. Love the big beautiful pictures for every single recipe (I hate not knowing what something's supposed to look like). Easy to follow instructions with common ingredients (I hate a recipe with a ton of steps that uses spices I need to Google). Plus, variety, variety, variety. There's something in here for everyone for every meal. As I'm not much of a natural cook, I rely on good solid recipes and this book is my new precious.

I am just starting to become “veganish” and this was a great first book. One of the things that attracted me to eating this way was the focus on real food that I can easily find. I don’t want to be just buying vegan junk food (think all the chemical laden vegan versions of meat/cheese products). Her enthusiasm for cooking and being vegan is amazing.We have made several of her recipes already. The cheese ball is quick and delicious and I throw in other ingredients each time I make it for variety. Her lentil loaf (pictured) was amazing (I probably will save the puff pastry wrapping for special occasions only though). My omnivore son actually wanted leftovers to take home with him!There are lots of easy recipes here that will help you bridge to this new way of eating. Yes, this book will have you spending more time in the kitchen than if you are just microwaving a frozen vegan dinner (the recipes are easier than many cookbooks) but it is fun and far healthier. Enjoy the cooking process and develop a bond with the food that is fueling your day.

This cookbook is AMAZING!! I have a few vegan cookbooks. After receiving every single vegan cookbook I’ve ever gotten or been gifted, I would look through the whole thing. All of my other books, I would find maybe 8-10 recipes that actually sounded good and that I would like to make. The rest had ingredients I didn’t recognize or looked and sounded just...bleh. Not with this book!! Literally ever single recipe except maybe 2 (only because I don’t care for mushrooms), I want to make!! It all looks delicious and has simple ingredients anyone can get from their local grocery store! This cookbook is worth every cent. Really. Sam Turnbull is AMAZING.😃💓

If you are questioning about buying this cookbook. BUY IT!!! Her recipes are incredibly simple and ingredient listing is cheap and not super long. The best part, all of this food tastes AMAZING. I bought this for a non-vegan friend who doesn't like long, detailed recipes. She fell in love with this book! My only regret is that I wish I had this cookbook sooner when I first became vegan.

Great Cookbook! I have been following Sam for about a year and after 20+ years as a vegan, I can say that her site and this cookbook are truly outstanding. Sam is that rare combination of imaginative AND detail oriented. Not only does she offer great recipes, but she is careful to provide clear and accurate step by step instructions. Sam also offers great tips and techniques. I just tried her Tempeh BLT (with avocado) and I loved it!! I had always resorted to buying a pack of tempeh bacon - but now I can EASILY throw together a much less salty, very tasty version. For those of you who are newer to vegan cooking - make sure to try her tofu crumbles in her Tofu Bolognese - those little babies are delicious added to other recipes (especially chili - Sam has one on her site that is really the best).I am so happy to add this to my collection of cookbooks. It is really beautifully done and Sam should be so proud of what she has accomplished. This young woman is a rising star!
