White Picket Fences: Turning toward Love in a World Divided by Privilege, by Amy Julia Becker

Review

Sometimes realizing your privilege starts with looking at your bookshelf.Amy Julia Becker, author of White Picket Fences, began to consider the whiteness of her bookshelf, a bookshelf found acting “not as a door but as a mirror, a mirror that shows me my white skin, my stable and traditional family, my remote and safe neighborhood, and little of the expansive world outside [her] door” (19). As Becker quickly discovered in an attempt to read quality children’s literature with her three children, privilege often starts with noticing who’s not on your bookshelf – which for her meant realizing that there weren’t any books that featured children of different ethnic or racial backgrounds.Nearly every character in the books she loved and filled her shelves with was white.Connecting the dots from her bookshelf to her identity as a white, straight, middle-to-upper class, educated woman meant coming to grips with the reality of a privilege that had always been hers. But if waking up to the reality of privilege ultimately means learning to use and lay down this same privilege for good, a journey of noticing and deconstructing first must take place.Like her previous books, A Good and Perfect Gift and Small Talk, Becker’s writing centers in story and in the art of telling good stories about herself and the people in her life. Perhaps most profoundly, the author is most able to identify privilege through her relationship with her oldest daughter, Penny, who was born with Down syndrome. Had it not been for Penny’s presence in her life, she might still feel dismissive or even bewildered by controversy (136), but being in intimate relationship with her daughter helped her make connections to other injustices bought by the price of privilege.“As I have learned more about the history of people with intellectual disabilities,” she writes, “I have seen the parallels in their treatment to that of other oppressed groups” (137). I found myself nodding my head in agreement, because when the conversation becomes personal, we are changed. When we see how the heights and depths of how oppression affects those we intimately, actually know, then we are changed.Although Becker writes to a Christian audience, the message is universal: if love lives at the core of our identity as human beings, then the power of love is big enough to change the way we interact with the world around us – just as it’s big enough for every single one of us to not only be given a seat at the table but to be offered the seat of honor and lifted up to a place of power. And in that way, I hold onto a little bit of hope. Amy Julia Becker shows me that the tides of white supremacy and colonization might actually be turning, one conversation, one lament and one realization of privilege at a time. (Cara Meredith, writer, speaker, and author of The Color of Life: A Journey toward Love and Racial Justice)

Discussing the reality of privilege is both uncomfortable and essential. In White Picket Fences, Amy Julia Becker explores this critically important topic without being heavy-handed or didactic. I was pulled in from page one by Amy Julia’s writing, which is warm, honest, and inviting as she beautifully explores her own life and story of privilege. Compelling, wise, and vital. (Tish Harrison Warren, author of Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life)White Picket Fences bravely confronts privilege whilst challenging readers to do the same. As Becker gets personal with her reader, she offers more than perceived answers: She offers space and grace. At a time when allies continue to peel back the layers of privilege in their lives, White Picket Fences is timely! (Carolina Hinojosa-Cisneros, Tejana poet and freelance writer)As a white mother of black children, this topic is nuanced and highly personal for me. Amy Julia masterfully created a safe space for my heart to explore what has otherwise felt like a loaded subject. This is a book for every thoughtful soul. (Sara Hagerty, author of Unseen: The Gift of Being Hidden in a World That Loves to Be Noticed)Renouncing privilege isn’t always possible―or even desirable. In White Picket Fences, Amy Julia enters this conversation with wisdom and candor, inviting the reader to consider the transforming power of grace and gratitude to direct what we’ve been given to do the work of love. (Rachel Marie Stone, author of Birthing Hope: Giving Fear to the Light)A writer of beauty, bravery, and compassion takes on a topic as searingly painful as it is depressingly timely. As she shares her own journey so unsparingly, Becker nudges readers toward self-reflection, inspiring hope for new beginnings and opening hearts to healing. (Rachel Simon, author of Riding the Bus with My Sister)Through Amy Julia’s raw and vulnerable story-telling, I discovered not only the harm my own privilege has caused but also a God-birthed desire to actively engage in reconciliation and healing. Captivating and deeply personal, White Picket Fences is Amy Julia’s best work yet. (Jeannie Cunnion, author of Mom Set Free)It takes a special kind of writer―a special kind of person―to write about privilege in a vulnerable way. Amy Julia Becker is exactly such a writer and such a person. Becker offers an unflinching examination of what obligations and obstacles come with privilege in a world marred by so many injustices done to those without the advantages many of us take for granted. White Picket Fences is a must-read for all who wish to break down the barriers that divide our communities and our nation today. (Karen Swallow Prior, author of On Reading Well)I want to read every word Amy Julia Becker writes. No one I know captures so completely the ache and the joy of being human. White Picket Fences is her most compelling book yet, tackling one of the thorniest topics of our time and illuminating it with honesty, humility, and hope. Privilege so often involves a conspiracy to forget, and this book gently, unflinchingly insists that we remember. But it also helps us believe that in a world so often torn by violence and indifference, love can still have the last and best word. (Andy Crouch, author of Strong and Weak: Embracing a Life of Love, Risk, and True Flourishing)If there were ever a writer who can wrest beauty out of deep complexity and pain, it is Amy Julia Becker. Written with elegant honesty, her new book explores the burden of privilege and the responsibility and call to steward it well. I’m grateful for Becker’s willingness to wade into deep waters and to emerge from them with a timely vision of human flourishing for all. (Katelyn Beaty, author of A Woman's Place)Without shaming or victimizing, Becker considers painful truths and beautiful possibilities for healing the divisions of our present moment. (Gabe Lyons, founder of Q Ideas)A deeply human book. As a woman who shares many of Becker’s advantages, I’ve been immensely helped, by Becker’s words, to begin believing that God can use our suffering―and our privilege―for good. (Jen Pollock Michel, author of Teach Us to Want)Amy Julia Becker allows us to enter an important―but not easy―spiritual journey of awakening and enlightenment. Beautifully and elegantly written in prose that does not allow us to shrink from a painful reality, Becker challenges us to move out of the stagnant state of “benign” racism. Without “white-explaining,” Becker presents a convincing story of everyday privilege, a disruption of that privilege, and a necessary transformation. (Soong-Chan Rah, author of Many Colors: Cultural Intelligence for a Changing Church)Amy Julia is an exceptionally skilled writer, no doubt about that. But what I admire most about this book is that she is opening herself up to being raked over. She doesn’t have to do it. Nevertheless, it is obvious she believes that coming to terms with white privilege and naming it for what it is matters more to her than her reputation. She doesn’t shy away from the good, the bad, and the ugly of her privileged upbringing. While gentle and beautiful, this book is hard-hitting and will force us to confront the truth about our history. The question is: Will we? (Marlena Graves, author of A Beautiful Disaster)

Loved this book. As a white woman who grew up in a very "privileged" home on the East Coast, I have been trying to engage in the conversations about race and privilege that are happening in my city (Boston) but have increasingly felt like I didn't even understand the issues enough to really engage. Amy Julia Becker's honest and frank account of her upbringing gently sheds light on the issues that privilege causes; the divisions, separation, and insularity it inflicts on the under privileged and those with privilege. It is, on the one hand, a beautifully written account of her childhood and her adult and family life, and on the other hand, an examination of that life with the eyes of an adult seeking truth and honesty about her privileged upbringing. I was impressed at her ability to admit fault and failure as a woman in her community and as a parent, and related to so much of what she said. I also found the second half of the book very helpful, where she leads the reader towards a "so what now?" conclusion that is based in grace and love and confession. It has shaped my thinking and encouraged me to engage with my community in a humble way.

My copy of this book is underlined all over the place! "Privilege provides for material needs, but it seems to work against the fulfillment of other human needs. Instead, privilege correlates with some of the shadows of the human experience-eating disorders and anxiety and substance abuse, among others". As a senior high youth leader, I am better equipped to guide and counsel and ask good questions to my students who span the "privilege spectrum".I haven't met Amy Julia Becker yet, but the church I grew up in is her church and my childhood home town is her adult home town. It was interesting to read about her walks around the green, to and from the library and be able to picture it all so clearly. She is a great writer. Her vulnerability and honesty made me adore her.Personally I grew in many ways from reflecting on all the things she says. White Picket Fences is our book clubs next pick. I can't wait to discuss it...We are inviting the author to attend, if it works out with her schedule.

One of the chapters that moved me most was, "Privilege Walk." During an exercise in college, the author and her classmates were instructed to "Take one step forward" if they'd traveled abroad, had parents who attended college or enjoyed other advantages and to "Take one step back" if they were raised in a high crime area, a single parent household, or had ever been questioned by the police because of their race. She writes, "All of us who advance to the front of the room have white skin." She reflects that the exercise was "designed to demonstrate the unwitting advantages of privilege." Becker describes "White Picket Fences" as a "confession"--both of guilt and of faith. She writes that she has come to understand that privilege is not in and of itself a sign of God's blessing, but a fact of life that can be used for good or ill. This book, like its author, is tough, smart, and compassionate. I highly recommend to people who would find themselves at the front of the room if they were to do a "privilege walk." You'll be able to work through unsettling questions, histories, and feelings and, I believe, finish the book refreshed and ready to love.

This book touched me to the core. As a white woman of privilege, it was difficult to accept the raw truths that White Picket Fences forced me to see and admit to. As the grandmother of two bi racial children, it is incumbent upon me to try harder, work harder and love harder to make even the littlest difference. Amy Julia has thoughtfully exposed, through her own stories and experiences, how critical it is to encourage change through faith, love and compassion. This book inspires self reflection, action, openness, clarity of perspective and empathy. By describing her personal story so eloquently, sparing no vulnerabilities, Amy Julia encourages us to be our loving best, in whatever way we can. This is a must read for any and all!

I read everything Amy Julia writes. Through vulnerable storytelling and wise teaching, she invites the reader into her story to wrestle with her questions and engage her struggles. White Picket Fences is no exception. In an increasingly divided world, Amy Julia engages the tough questions about privilege and uses her wise voice to bridge the gap. Her brilliant book is the best thing I've read on the topic and I feel simultaneously encouraged in my own experience and challenged to confront my own destructive tendencies when it comes to my own privilege. I will recommend this book to everyone.

Like many others I am seeking to understand what "white privilege" means and I want to be part of the solution. I was anxious to read White Picket Fences by Amy Julia because I knew her briefly and admired her ability to write and speak about difficult topics with humility, transparency, depth of knowledge and courage. There are social and political issues that deeply divide our country and the world today. Through stories , historicalreflections and openness about her personal struggles Amy shows us that privilege harms all of us. In seeking solutions she encourages conversation not confrontation, blessing not bitterness, citizenship not partisanship and huge doses of forgiveness, trust and love. This book will resonate well with women. She provides 22 questions for discussion which makes it ideal for bookclubs. For further reading there are extensive sources cited in the notes. White Picket Fences encourages me that I canmake a difference and I can change the world. Amy Julia tells us "small ripples can address the massive expanseof the need" ( pg 165 ) This book will help you learn how to become a small ripple of healing in a world in need.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a social conscience. It is not a lecture on how to behave but more on how to recognize the subtleties we whites assume our rights thinking that everyone else has the same opportunities and protections. A difficult read, but one that gives great hope.

Ancient Mosaics, by Roger Ling

From Library Journal

While most books on ancient mosaics concern themselves mainly with the "how-to" of a specific monument, Ling offers a broad and accessible overview. The evolution of ancient mosaics began in the Greek late Classical period with floors decorated with pebble mosaics and culminated in the lush wall and vault mosaics of Christian Rome. Ling follows the progress of mosaics across the span of the Greco-Roman world, from Britain to Egypt and Spain to Syria, carefully examining stylistic development, techniques, materials, and influences. In addition, he places the mosaics carefully in the context of the world for which and in which they were created. Because of the durable material used, many mosaics are still available for viewing, and Ling has selected a generous sampling for detailed illustration. A solid work by a respected author, this is recommended for both academic and public libraries. --Mary Morgan Smith, Northland P.L., PittsburghCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Roger Ling is a true scholar. He knows his subject and writes with clarity. He describes the method of creating a mosaic. This was a tedious task which required inserting a slender piece of baked clay or glass or marble into wet cement. Thus only a very small section could be done at a time. These pieces of baked clay are called tesserae. Some are one half inch by one half inch. Others are slender little guys only one millimeter by perhaps two millimeter. These were used to make a mosaic such as that of the doves found in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Mosaics were placed on the walls, floors and ceilings. Most which survive are from the floor. This makes sense. When a building collapses most mosaics of the walls and ceiling would perish but conceal and protect the mosaic floor below. Mosaics were monochrome, also highly colorful. There was much experimentation. Some mosaics display a three dimensional effect. Some reproduce famous paintings. Some display reproduction of a painting with modifications made by the artists or the patron of the piece. Some of the experimentation in mosaics ended up influencing architectural design. I suggest reading Pinto's and MacDonald's Hadrian's Villa and Its Legacy. Studies are under way to trace mosaicists works found in areas stretching over large parts of Italy and Europe. Mosaic patterns in various rooms can be used on occasion to determine what use that room had. Evidently mosaics in triclinia (dining rooms) were designed to generate discussion. I would highly recommend reading Linda Farrar's Ancient Romans Gardens after reading this book.

This book is short, almost every page has a photograph of a mosaic, and the writing is decent, so it is suitable as a first book to read about Greek and Roman mosaics. But Ling takes too much of his short space to describe the figures and perspective of mosaics and says too little about the procedures used to make mosaics. There is just one diagram showing schematically how mosaics were laid, and this follows Vitruvius who Ling immediately says is often not followed in the pavements we study! I would like to hear less about chiaroscuro and more about the ingredients used in the mortar, and most of all how the complicated geometric designs were done. The long descriptions feel pointless and read like heraldry. Also, the glossary is inadequate for an introduction: the author in many places uses technical or quasi-technical terms like roundel, apsidal, vegetal, frieze, "rhythmic", register, ambulatory, without ever defining what these mean in art writing. Finally, Ling says a little about the social place of mosaic makers, but the only source he mentions is Diocletian's Edict on Prices, which is notorious for not being followed.A great service would be done by making a database of all ancient mosaics. As far as I can tell this does not exist, but perhaps something like that can be done on Wikipedia. I am not an historian of arts and crafts; if I were I would go ahead with this myself.

This book was a disappointment and when I look at the ridiculous prices being asked for it these days ($62.00 for the cheapest copy!!), I got motivated to write a review. It all depends on your expectations. If you want information on Greek and Roman mosaics, on the history and techniques, then this book has a lot of information, even if it is a short book (140 pages). But if you want stunning pictures of ancient mosaics, this is not the book to get. The book has 47 color pictures and 49 black/white pictures. The pictures tend to be small, as the priority is given to the text, not the photographs. My interest is in Byzantine mosaics. Two books that have good color pictures of Byzantine mosaics are: "Byzantine Art" by Jannic Durand, and "Byzantium: from Antiquity to the Renaissance" by Thomas Mathews, which is a smaller book, but also has many color photographs. Neither of those would qualify as a coffee table book, but the one by Durand comes closest to that.German publisher Konemman came out with a book which is oversize that probably has lots of picture of Byzantine art (as well as Ottoman art), called "Constantinople: Istanbul's historical heritage", by Stephane Yerasimos. I have not seen it yet, but Konemann's books are usually "feast for the eyes" material.I don't know of book on ancient mosaics in general (not just Byzantine) that has great color photographs. If that is your interest, surely this one by Roger Ling is not the one.

This title is absolutely worth every penny. Though weighing in at only 143 pages, it is deceptively meaty and educational. The 106 selected photos (47 color and 49 B/W) are crisp, beautiful, and plentiful, and the inclusion of a maps and a glossary were also helpful. The mosaics selected for illustration are sublime, and even those ravaged by time are hardly less beautiful for it. Chapters are (in order) Intro, Greek Period, Roman Italy, Roman North-West, Roman Africa, Wall and Vault Mounts, and Context and Meaning. In a book of this length each chapter is necessarily short, but the examples chosen to illustrate each section are well-chosen to guide further study in selected areas.

Mr. Ling, as our tour guide, transports us back in time and from Africa to ancient England, sharing the history, development and travel/migration of this peculiar art form. His 'tour bus' stops frequently at wonderful examples as he shares bits of history, syles, techniques and other information quickly and painlessly.Aside from detailed instructions on "How To", Mr. Ling's book gives everything else one could ask for. Actually, one could make mosaics learning from this book, it just doesn't have that particular focus.I've only had the book for 13 hours so am anxious to get home and pick it up for another read.

I really appreciate scholarly works like this book. I've been trying to find a good book on the history of mosaics that is - in-print - and this is it! Excellent documentation! Not too - dry - of a read either. A big thanks to Roger Ling for the enlightenment. Beautiful photographs, wish there were a-whole-lot more.

Wonderful book. Good service.

Why People Don't Heal and How They Can, by Caroline Myss

From the Inside Flap

For more than fifteen years, Caroline Myss has studied why some people heal, while others do not. In her previous book, Anatomy of the Spirit, Dr. Myss illuminated the hidden interactions of belief and body, soul and cell to show how, as she inimitably puts it, "your biography becomes your biology." In this new book, she builds on her earlier teachings of the seven different energy centers of the body to provide a vital self-healing program for physical and spiritual disorders. With her characteristic no-nonsense style and high-voltage storytelling, she exposes and explodes the five myths about healing, explains the cultural and individual contexts in which people become physically and spiritually ill and invested in "woundology," and teaches new methods of working with the challenges that the seven energy centers embody. Both visionary and practical, Why People Don't Heal and How They Can presents a bold new account of the development of human consciousness and spirituality over the ages, and examines the dynamic global transformation of attitudes about healing. To help you get and stay on the path to wellness, Dr. Myss provides rituals and prayers for gaining a symbolic perspective on your life issues; for bolstering your personal power; and for connecting with a universal divine energy. Dr. Myss's breakthrough views on energy medicine and her active approach to healing life issues and physical illness will help you overcome the mental blocks that keep you from becoming well.

Overall very good. A different perspective on the mind-body connection. Sometimes wanders off down woo-woo road, but mostly good advice for people with an open mind. The primary message - that we engage in behaviors that get in the way of our own healing - is critically important and something people should be talking about more widely.

really good, but too much reference to the first book and mention of things like archtype personalities that i had to look up because they were not explained in the book

This book helped me understand why I had to do some of the things I did when I faced my disease. I hope this book helps you identify the people you need (and those you don't, including some physicians) when you face your "Dark Night of the Soul".

I really like this, love it actually as I do most of her books that I've read. I am going back & picking it apart & really acting on this and discovering additional epiphanies to go along with it. I don't really have physical problems, but it is Great for all areas of your life. I gave one to another person who doesn't really want to let go of her physical ailments (wants disability more than healing), but if anyone will read this twice & work with it seriously...it can heal many areas of your life: physical, spiritual, emotional, etc.

Not an easy read, but full of good insights if you can force yourself to keep reading.

This is one of the most powerful books I have read. Seeing things objectively (Symbolic Sight) and becoming conscious of negative energies and what is preventing healing/progress are inspiring themes!

Comparing and Contrasting two Audio CDs: "Why People Don't Heal," 1994 and "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource," 2004.Each audio CD is not a reading from that book, but a talk given by Myss to an audience that ranges over the major points, with her spontaneous ideas. The version of "Why People Don't Heal" that I received included 2 CDs, the first one is a lecture of her main points, and the second is her replies to written questions the audience has submitted. "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource," was four CDs, which actually say little about archetypes but allow her time to describe what she has discovered since retiring from being a medical intuitive and moving full time into educating medical intuitives.About the sarcasm: In both audiobooks, Myss' voice has a sarcastic tone. Why People Don't Heal was recorded about ten years earlier than "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource"__ and to me her tone sounds even more sarcastic in the later recording. Her sarcasm is toward her readers/listeners, which I will describe later in my review. Sarcasm doesn't bother me too much, and I must say, her sense of comic timing has greatly improved from the earlier recording. In "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource"_, the audience actually laughs when she makes fun of them, and I found myself laughing out loud a few times myself. Laughing about oneself can be healing... however, by the end of both audio books, I felt heavy and tired from the nonstop barrage of criticism.Sarcasm Not Present in her Books:My wife and I have both read Caroline Myss' books and we did not sense sarcasm in the written books. We were both surprised to discover the degree of sarcasm in her recorded voice. I did not tell my wife about the sarcasm before I gave her the CDs. After she listened she shyly told me that she had to turn off the CDs because the sarcasm became too much for her. She too, said she was surprised to hear the sarcasm because she had not noticed any sarcasm while reading the books. Perhaps she has good editors?Career Shift:In "Why People Don't Heal," Caroline Myss describes herself as a Medical Intuitive. During this phase of her life, apparently her experience is in working with individuals, often by phone, to see into their bodies and diagnosing the causes of their disease. In "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource", she had retired from working with individuals and now worked with groups teaching them how to be medically intuitive. Her main points:"Why we don't heal," The reason people don't heal is that they invest too much of their personal energy in past issues that they refuse to release. For example, if a person holds a grudge upon someone from their past, they must continually re-invest their personal energy in that grudge, daily, hourly. That energy that is going into a past event diverts valuable energy that could be here now helping them heal. The person sends away the very healing energy that could be healing them. There are many ways that people send their energy away, and the generalization for all of these is "attachments." There is plenty of healing energy within each person to heal them, if only they weren't sending this energy out of themselves on non-productive missions. One reason that people hold on to attachments is that it gives them an excuse to avoid challenges in their life, she says. The cure for all attachments, according to Myss, is Forgiveness, and Calling Back Your Energy. This seems do-able.In "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource" there seem to be two main points. The first is very similar to the message above, but now applied to students of intuition. The book title could have been, "Why Students of Intuition Don't Feel Intuitive," which would have tied it into her earlier book. Students of intuition don't feel intuitive because they fear what would happen if they were to be remarkably intuitive. Again people rob their own connections or awareness by blocking their own powers. But students of intuition are not worrying about the past, now their concern is the future. Students of intuition state that they fear how they will be received by others, but Myss says that is a ruse. What they really fear is that they will be far more aware of the issues in their own lives, and they will no longer be able to hide from their own games. Myss says the most common reason people want to be more intuitive is so that they may control their lives to have a perfect relationship, a healing career that always supplies them with adequate money, and comfort. She is very critical of these motives. Myss says being more intuitive has the opposite effect; it forces a person to deal with her own issues, exposes her to unforseen challenges, one of which is to commit to a life of serving by divine guidance. Myss mentions that Catholic Nuns must do the following exercise as preparation to entering the service: every day for ninety days, ask yourself, "What is more important to me than divine guidance?" On the fourth CD she also mentions that intuitive healers should be cautious about demons, that the Catholic practice of exorcsism and demonology was her graduate project in college. As the CD set progresses, Myss more and more hammers home her point that to be intuitive requires turning one's life inside out, committing to embracing the unknown and unconditionally submitting to divine guidance. I see her point, but I think it could be stated much differently. She seems to have grown annoyed by humans who do not progress as fast as she does. She seems to be "guilting" us into picking up the pace. I think there are many gradations of becoming more intuitive and any person can find their personal balance. You may become a little more intuitive by embracing a little more unknown or releasing a little bit of control, and then you may be at balance for you, for now. I think it is important to feel safe as you progress. Listening to this CD is scary and I think it would discourage more people than it encourages. The main point I disagree with is that Myss presents intuition as "all or nothing," but I see it more naturally embraced in safe, do-able steps, at a pace that feels right...as Obama says, "change we can life with." Myss seems to be impatient for more change now.My recommendations:I recommend "Why People Don't Heal" highest rating for both people with healing issues and for students of intuition. While some sarcasm is present, it is easier to dismiss. "Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource" would work for a student of intuition who is fearless and unaffected by the teacher's impatience and sarcasm (or perhaps it stands as a historic study of how a teacher changes over time).Whichever audio lecture you choose, keep in mind that the path to healing or to intuition, while challenging, is a lot more fun and more rewarding than these CDs reveal.

If you are open to confronting your issues, Caroline Myss provides the road-map. Like other self-help books, there is so much information in 'Why people don't heal and how they can,' that you spend just as much time reflecting on the ideas as reading them, but the destination is well worth the trip. I am fascinated with Caroline Myss' ideas on 'woundology' and how our culture has become attuned to using our hurts as the language of intimacy ... want to know more? Buy the book!

Thanks to this author writing this book, I was able to propagate several plants that had defied my previous efforts. If you want to increase your native plants, especially ones that are hard to find even at specialty online nurseries, you need to propagate them; this book describes best methods for a number of plants, including when to take cuttings or grow from seed or transplant, etc. An experienced horticulturalist might not need this, however the vast majority of us are not experienced and therefore need the clear guidance offered in such a book.

I've owned this book for over 15 years and still give it as a gift to anyone interested in wildflower propagation. It is my best resource and the methods have worked in my own garden. It covers plants not just in the southeast but those that are native to the northeast from Maine, through lower Canada, south to GA and west to parts of the Great Plains, and up to Illinois---quite a large region. A few plants have cousins or populations in the NW and CA, too. Yes, it is written in NC but many plants (not all), are native to about 1/2 of the U.S. His advice could be adapted if plants emerge and ripen earlier or later. I also use William Cullina's Growing and Propagating Wildflowers of the U.S. and Canada (that taught me that trillium seeds and many others need to be rinsed first). But, this Harry Phillip's book is my favorite. I have drifts of wild ginger, bloodroot and even trillium all grown from seed. Thank you, Harry!

Great specific details for planting wildflowers. Although I have many seeds from plants NOT included, knowing how many of their relatives are successfully, prepared and grown is a big help! I took a class on this subject, and the instructor indicated this was a must for anyone interested in growing their own:) I choose to believe!

Good information but not much for all wild flowers around the country . Couldn’t tell that till I bought the book .

like it lots of information

interesting

Very easy read! Directions are thorough and results are attainable. However, I wish the author had not included non-native wildflowers, despite their naturalized status. I do appreciate clear and simple instructions, which seems to be rare in many gardening books...who'd think that, huh?

Great book

Roger Thompson's gorgeous book We Stood Upon Stars is a collection of travel essays centered around important wilderness areas (Yosemite, Big Sur, Death Valley, Marfa, etc) and their meaning in his life as it relates to fatherhood, faith, and masculinity. However, this is not another book about "Biblical manhood" (thank God), but about vulnerability and fear as it relates to our experiences in the untamed areas in our lives. This book is not preachy and it appears to have no agenda. Some people may not like the disjointed nature of the book - there is no real overarching narrative and it jumps around in time a lot - but it's easy to read (the chapters are short), and the prose is gorgeous and poetic. We Stood Upon Stars fills a glaring void in the Christian book market - the relationship between people, places, and the allure of the open road, early morning mountain sunset, and a good craft brew (beer or coffee, your choice).Thompson certainly has a gift with describing the intertwining beauty of faith and nature. Some of these essays are extremely powerful, especially the ones related to fatherhood and the death of his grandfather. Ultimately, We Stood Upon Stars is an breathtakingly simple and intoxicating read - one that affirms the desire for travel and adventure without downplaying the harsh reality of the heartbreaks of life. Most travelogues or adventure narratives are about escaping yourself by running away into the unknown; We Stood Upon Stars is all about finding yourself by running into the wildness of your soul and the land. Also of note: Each essay has a hand-sketched map attached the beginning of each chapter. These are amazing. Each map contains notes on where to eat, drink, fish, hike, and explore that you won't find on a mainstream travel guide.

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book. I liked the cover and I really liked the synopsis. When I started reading, I'll be honest I didn't know what to think about it, but the further along I got I really liked going on the author, Roger's adventures. The book has it all, Tidbits of history, truth, family, friends, funny stories and faith. It even has maps of the places Roger has been! It's a great book for any outdoors person in your life and even if you don't like the outdoors you should still read it! I find myself wanting to visit all the places Roger has been, a great read!

Seldom do I find a book that I both want to binge-read through in one sitting and slow down to read one fantastic chapter at a time to stretch out the experience at the same time. Roger Thompson's writing is like a fabulous glass of great wine, enjoyed by a fireplace, in the woods, after a day of hiking and kayaking with your best friends and family. It simply does not get any better than that. Wait, it actually does because the author also intertwines those strings in life that tie us to our maker in the most organic and beautiful ways. Faith and adventure, what could be better. Please read and enjoy that you did.

I've truly enjoyed reading, "We Stood Upon Stars." Roger Thompson's writing is beautiful, humble, honest and so descriptive that I can feel and see everything. As a woman who doesn't necessarily consider herself religious, I've found Thompson's travel essays to be some sort of experience, one that I could connect to something bigger. His deep gratitude for nature proves to be a spiritual one and through the essays it has become one for me as well.It would be difficult to not find Thompson's candor endearing, however more importantly, his fierce desire for self-exploration is inspiring and contagious. I've found myself reconsidering the importance of summertime with my own children, perhaps through Thompson's lens having the courage to road trip the Midwest like I've always wanted. "We Stood Upon Stars," has rattled something inside me that's been stirring for quite some time, and now I think I'm finally ready to hit the road.

While we live in this fast paced world filled with gadgets that take us away from what is really important, Roger takes us to a good place. I felt so refreshed to go on these trips, take the back roads, slow down and really see things instead of trying to reach a destination. I loved the humor and mishaps along the way. I related so much to my families trips and the many breakdowns of vehicles that you hate at the time, but add humor to the adventure later on when you look back and these things stand out. Roger's writing takes you on these adventures in a way that makes you feel like you have been there. Enjoy the ride!

What a beautiful book. I've never taken the time to write a book review, but this book was too compelling not too. For anyone who loves the outdoors, the author's descriptions of different locations and trips are enough to make this book worth your time. But what this book did is really speak to me as a man, and what it means to be a son, a husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather. That is where this book really shines, and it literally brought me to tears several times.

If you love the great outdoors this book is for you. If you have children and enjoyed being a part of their lives as they grew up this book is for you. If you love VW vanagons then this book is for you.Very well written and it flows great. The exploration of our National Parks along with the father / son / grandfather dynamics are something that any man can relate to.I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

A wonderful collection of adventures and travel essays told with humor and insight. I loved this book! It will inspire you to plan your next trip and to become the best version of yourself. This book is groundbreaking, a beautifully descriptive narrative that is honest and vulnerable. It will leave you wanting more.Thompson is an amazing story teller. Don’t miss this one!

This book is a fascinating and convincing analysis of (1) the political contest between pro and anti-slavery forces during the founding of the United States, (2) the legacy left by that contest in the text of the Constitution, and (3) the contribution of that legacy to the eventual destruction of slavery. Short and to the point, yet nuanced and complex, it presumes on the part of the reader a basic familiarity with American history and the U.S. Constitution. As the author, Sean Wilentz, explains, during the last thirty years, historians have “forced a reckoning with the Constitution’s concessions to slavery that scholars had evaded for generations”—such as the infamous “three fifths compromise” by which the slave holding states obtained greater representation in the House of Representatives than would have been due them if representation had been based only on their share of the nation’s voting population. While acknowledging the beneficial aspect of that “reckoning,” Wilentz argues that a victory by the forces OPPOSING slavery that has been overlooked by the historians of recent decades was at least equally important in shaping the Constitution, and possibly more decisive in determining the fate of slavery. To make the foundational struggle between pro and anti-slavery forces more comprehensible, Wilentz first explains that one of the central purposes of the constitution was to increase the security of personal property—a purpose that also motivated Congress when it added the Bill of Rights with its “Fifth Amendment,” which prohibits the government from taking away any person’s “life, liberty or property without due process of law.”At the time of the constitutional convention, under the laws of the states in which slavery was legal, enslaved persons were defined as property. If the founders had tried to create a constitution under which the enslaved persons could have been emancipated by the federal government, the founders would have been threatening the slave holders' property rights under state law, and no slave holding state would have accepted such a constitution. However, what the anti-slavery founders were able to do was to EXCLUDE from the Constitution any hint that enslaved persons ALSO were defined as property under FEDERAL law. For this reason, the new federal government was constitutionally able to prohibit slavery in geographical areas or business transactions controlled by the federal government—such as the territories in the West, and the trade in slaves that was conducted internationally. At the time of the drafting of the Constitution, the power of the federal government to end the international slave trade may have been considered the most important concession made to either side. Ultimately, however, what ended slavery was the power of the federal government to prohibit slavery in the territories. The original Republican party, described by Wilentz as “an antislavery mass organization unprecedented in history,” was dedicated to strangling the institution of slavery by prohibiting its expansion into the territories. The election of the Republican party’s presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln, triggered secession by the majority of the slave holding states; and secession, in turn, triggered the bloody war that ended slavery.Of course, the seceding slave states insisted that the Constitution had given them federal property rights in their slaves. But Lincoln and his party had a well founded belief to the contrary. In every generation, only a small number of works of history have the potential to significantly enlarge our historical awareness. Sean Wilentz’s “No Property in Man” is such a work.

Wilentz's book on how slavery was treated in the Federal Convention in 1787 has been highly touted by academics and the Wall Street Journal. The praise is justified; Wilentz does a credible job of connecting the dots between the Convention and the secession of the Southern states in 1860. As such, the book will prove to be a handy reference tool for students and historians.Notable among Wilentz's observations are how the Southern states, from the Convention itself, constantly played the secession card to exact concessions from Northern states desirous of forming, and keeping together, the national union. Ironically, the many compromises struck between 1787 and 1860 contained the seeds of the South's destruction in 1865. And Northern patience had clearly worn thin upon the handing down of the Dred Scott decision, which was farcical in its assertions about slavery in the Constitution. Wilentz concludes that the South's worst fear all along was that the North was correct in belief that the Constitution did not authorize, overtly or tacitly, property in man.On the other hand, the "paradox" of the Convention's final product--at times exacerbated by one of the Constitution's authors, James Madison--left much ground to be occupied by supporters of slavery. As Dwight Eisenhower noted in 1960, Robert E. Lee fought for a "constitutionally debatable" issue. That he and the other Confederates were wrong is undeniable; nevertheless, the necessary compromises of 1787 bore bitter fruit that eventually led to war between the states in 1860.The reason I gave "No Property In Man" two stars is because of Wilentz's writing style, which can frankly sap so much energy from its subject (previously treated, in lively manner, by Don Fehrenbacher, Harry Jaffa, and David Potter) that reading it became, at times, a laborious march. This will probably not deter someone who specializes in Constitutional history or slavery, but the book is not exactly suitable for reading history for leisure. With that said, Wiletnz deserves kudos for the insight he brings to the issue of the treatment of slavery in the Constitution.

This book demands a close reading; providing it is very rewarding. One learns how much debate and disagreement went into events that we typically only recognize by a few word descriptives, like The Missouri Compromise or the Compromise of 1850. One comes to admire the courageous persistence of individuals who insisted from the start that slaves were not and could not be treated as "property--yet, how others believed exactly the opposite.Even if you have read many books about this period of history, I believe you will find this illuminating.

Wilentz's book is an elaboration on lectures given at Harvard on the theme of how slavery was and was not recognized in the Constitution. He acknowledges that some of the compromises made -- most notoriously the "three-fifths" rule -- gave disproportionate political weight to Southern slave states by including disenfranchised slaves in their notional populations -- but insists that anti-slavery representatives of various Northern states deliberately refused repeated efforts by Southern representatives to insert language to formalize a property right in slaves in the Constitution itself. He concludes that while the Constitution left slavery in place wherever it existed in 1789, the drafters refrained from any "legitimizing" language in the text -- not by oversight but by design -- and thus laid the groundwork for the abolition of slavery under federal law (but only after a catastrophic civil war).

I disliked nothing.I liked the precise analysis of the slavery issue during the founding and the clear, cogent writting. For anyone wanting to better understand our complex political and legal history with the institution of slavery , this is a must read.

We have way too many books. Some we like more than others, but there are few that we like so much that if it got lost or destroyed, I’d buy another copy. Zinnia’s Flower Garden is one of those books and after my kids read the first book to pieces, I ordered it on Amazon. It’s a very simple story, and the illustrations and diagrams are what make it stand out, as well as the blurb at the end showing kids how to plant their own garden. Every time we read it, we are re-inspired to work on our little garden.

I sent this book to my granddaughters at the beginning of summer when they started their garden. I have not seen the book, but my daughter said it is a great book. She said the illustrations are good and it has a nice story and it tells about how to grow plants. She also said it was a good book to send with the flower seed packs I sent.

My children and I really loved reading this book for our lessons on flowers! Loved how the illustrations incorporate drawings along with real pictures of the plants. So beautifully illustrated and colorful!

Bought this book to read to my 2-year-old before we planted flower pots with flowers as well as zinnia and sunflower seeds. She loves this book. It is a wonderful book that helps young ones understand working and planting in the garden. I highly recommend this book!

Cute book! Love the pics and the information as well.

I used this book for a Preschool story hour at a local library. The illustrations were bright and colorful with realistic photos of different kinds of flowers. It held the attention of 2 to 4 yr olds. A great lesson in learning about planting flowers and what they need to grow and thrive. After reading the book, the children planted their own zinnia seeds. So glad the book arrived quickly and in wonderful condition so we could use it for our story hour. I can't wait to read it to my 2 1/2 year old Grandson when I visit him this week!!

This is a great story about gardening! It also tells what happens in the garden through each season. It teaches students about hard work and determination!

Christmas gift. She loves it. Can read it herself.
