This review is being written in January 2013, 12 years after this book’s publication.I currently run a Star Wars Saga Edition game, and I still find this book useful even though it's from a previous version that's not entirely compatible with Sage Edition.Since the book was published shortly after Episode 1 was released (and before Episode 2) there is little mention of the Clone Wars, and no mention of Count Dooku at all. All the material is from the original trilogy, episode 1, and the expanded universe materials consisting of post Episode 6 materials, and the "Tales of the Jedi" comic books.All the NPCs, equipment, force powers, etc. in the book were updated for Saga Edition and included in various books (some dark side prestige classes appeared in the Core book, many Sith NPC stats appeared in the Jedi Academy Training Manual, etc. This means that if you simply want game stats, and related materials for Saga Edition, you don't need this book, as that material already exists.The benefit of this book isn't in the actual game statistics or "crunchy bits" as they're called, but in the discussions about the nature and running of darkside campaigns themselves. Although only 36 pages of this 159 page book are specifically about running dark side campaigns, I consider is required reading for those who plan on doing so. The Saga Edition books only touch on the issues involved in running an evil campaign, and present darkside classes and themes are options without really expounding on what those options might do to a campaign, and how to address those issues.Since this book is only about $10 used, I consider is a good deal, and still useful for modern Star Wars gamers. Just bare in mind that since it's over a decade old, and doesn't include material from 2/3 of the prequels (and none of the animated series, or modern expanded universe such as Old Republic), its chronology is incomplete.

Have you ever wondered about the Sith? Have you ever wanted to run or play a darkside character? This is the book for you.I was compelled to buy this book, not only out of my own curiosity, but because I'm running a Star Wars game where the players expressed a desire to explore the realms of ethical questionability with their characters. I'm glad I bought it.I might have only rated this with three stars instead of four, but for one thing: Hardcover. The hardcover alone is enough to make me appreciate a gaming book these days. Yes, they're heavy. But you can write on the back of them, the pages generally stay flat, and they're slightly more resistant to moisture. I could go on and on about hardcover gaming supplements, but I won't.The contents of the book suffer some the same problems as the core rulebook. Sidebars and pictures tend to clutter each page, making it a little harder to find the rules nuggets you're looking for. Some of the information seems to be repeated in different sections too, making for a slightly redundant read at times.Once you find what you're looking for, however, it's a decent sourcebook. Feats, skills, prestige classes, and equipment for dark Force-users are present, as you'd expect. Nothing mind-blowing there. They have some history and NPCs too.My favorite part details the psychology of the dark side, and how characters get lured into it's grasp. It even tells how Love can motivate someone to turn to the dark side. This is the kind of material you need to make convincing and varied darkside characters, and to lure your players into courting the dark side of the Force.I wanted more historical details about the Sith, the Republic, and the Hyperspace Wars, but I guess some of that is vague on purpose. They can't give everything away, and a lot of that kind of material has probably been written elsewhere anyway.My end conclusion: A good book, and definitely useful if you enjoy dark and gritty role-playing.

Whether you are a fan of RPGs, the SW movies, or both, you will find this book to be a great referance tool. It provides stats, campaign hooks, archetypes and a fair amount of Sith history. Anyone familiar with the "Expanded Universe" of comic and novels will appreciate the effort this text makes to include information for adventures in any possible era (from the Sith Empire to the New Republic). You can judge this book by its cover. The art is beautiful and disturbing, both inside and out.

Good resource for any D20 Star Wars game. Even if your playing a good guy Jedi game this book greatly enhances your game as a valuable resource.

A good resource for the player

Very worth it! I bought mine used, the book is VERY useful for darkside campaigns, and is nice as it gives you stats for many of the characters/creatures you may want to use in your campaign. Was slightly hard to navigate at times, but that was easily fixed with a few sticky notes a 4/5!

On Her Father’s Grave by Kendra Elliot is a great start to the Rogue River series. Kendra is writing two of the four books and Melinda Leigh is writing the other two. On Her Father’s Grave is an excellent start to the series. I do not know why some books just connect with a reader and you cannot read enough of the book, I just know that this was one of those books for me. I could not read it fast enough or enjoyed it more.Stevie Taylor returns to Solitude, Oregon, after her father’s death. She realizes how much she has missed being around her family and her hometown. She is hired as a patrol officer in the department where her father was the chief. He has been replaced by Zane Duncan, who is not from Solitude. But he is well liked by Stevie’s family and her deceased father felt like Zane was one of his sons. Will Stevie and Zane be able to work together or will Stevie dislike Zane for trying to replace her father?The two of them must work together to solve the mystery of why a teenager dies of no apparent cause. There is an unknown substance found in the dead teenager’s system. When another teenager dies under similar circumstances with the same substance found, Stevie and Zane are afraid there is a big drug problem facing them. They need to find out what the new drug is and who is supplying it to the teenagers, before any other teens die.The hometown setting and the family closeness make this book an exceptional read. The characters are well developed and well rounded. They are likable and people you would like to have as a friend. There is a relationship beginning to build between Stevie and Zane and I cannot wait to see where it leads. Some of the family members are behaving oddly and I want to find out the reason behind it.The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. I was hooked from the first page, wanting to learn more about each of the characters. The mystery of how the teen died and who the drug supplier is was carried on until the end. Since this is the first in a four book novella series, these questions, and others are not yet answered but there is a good foundation for the rest of the books. My only complaint about the books is that it is a novella. I wanted this book to be a full length novel because it was so good. I knew before I read this that it was a novella, but I wanted more to read right now. But I will definitely read the other three novellas when they are released. I have read other books from Kendra Elliot and I loved them all. This book is a great read and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery.I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the opportunity to read and review this book.

To be honest I'm not normally a fan of ongoing storylines such as this. I usually like my couples to get a happy ending and move on from there. However, I tend to enjoy novellas when written by talented authors and so I thought I'd give this first one in the "Rogue River" series a try. Although I do own other books by Kendra Elliot, I'm ashamed to say I haven't read any of them. That's a mistake I'll have to correct because I really enjoyed this story. Zane and Stevie were both well fleshed, and I truly cannot wait to follow them along on their journey. This entire story was fast paced, full of action and suspense, and literally just flew by. I have no doubt I'll enjoy watching their professional and personal relationships develop as the series continues. I'm already looking forward to book 2 by Melinda Leigh next, and seeing what she has in store for Stevie's sister Carly and her estranged husband Seth. I may have to wait for a price drop though, because I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $3.99 for a novella.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2REVIEW:On Her Father’s Grave is the first novella in Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh’s combined new novella series The Rogue River Series. And like any good novella the story was over way too quickly.We open On Her Father’s Grave with Stevie Taylor returning home after the passing of her father and her getting tired of life in LA. But not all is smooth sailing on Stevie’s first day of work or the day before her first day of work. The death of a local teen has everyone on edge.Zane Duncan finds himself through into the role as Chief of police (and not by choice). But what can he do other than honor the man who treated him like one of his own. Zane knows something is not right with Hunter’s death but finding the answers are not that easy. Could there be more more to this than just a kid overdosing on a new drug?Like any novella I review I can't give you much more then I loved it. I can’t wait for the next installment by Ms. Leigh to find out what happens next in the quiet little town of Solitude Oregon. I do hope that we will get to see more of Zane & Stevie in future books too. I want know what is happening with them. I really enjoy Kendra Elliot. In a series of four novellas, Ms Elliot paired with Melinda Leigh to create a quiet Oregon town that is beginning to lose its innocence about drug use. The chief of police and his newly hired police officer from LA are just ferreting out the issue at the end of this story. I presume it will continue in the next three of the series. As noted above, the characters develop quickly and are well drawn including the supporting cast. Many questions are raised and hints are given to make the reader wonder who is involved with the drugs. I believe this is a good start to a novel. If you like a bit of romance, that is thrown in, too. However, it appears the reader will need to purchase four novellas at about three dollars each to finish this work. I am not that enamored of the story to spend the money. I will continue to read Ms Elliot's full-out novels. They are adrenaline pushing and fully formed in plot and character and not overly formulaic and cost at least half as much as this Rogue River series. The Rogue River series would have made one pretty good book.

This is a review for the duology as as whole *spoilers ahead*I have read plenty of BL (boys love) manga—also known as yaoi—and I have same-sex couplings amongst my characters, but I haven’t read an m/m romance before. Well, there was one that was part of a larger series, but it was the only one in that series that could be considered m/m. I decided it was time to start. I love fantasy, and that has been my genre of choice, so I started looking for m/m romance that would fit the bill. I literally typed in “gay fantasy romance” in the Amazon search bar. A bunch of choices popped up, and Song of the Fallen caught my eye. I have a thing for elves, so an m/m romance with elves in it? Yes, please! This duology caught my attention, and after reading over reviews, I decided to read it for myself. I have never finished two books so fast. I could not put them down. Counterpoint held my attention, as did Crescendo. I loved both Frayrik “Rik” and Ayden (especially Ayden). I really do have a thing for elves. And that poor guy went through so much. Frayrik did, too, but Ayden…it was just one thing after another. The flogging scene towards the end of Counterpoint was brutal. I have to look away if there is a whipping scene on TV, and reading it was just as bad. But it shows the strength of the writer to be able to invoke such emotions. And the banter between him and Freyrik made me laugh on several occasions. Both of these characters have their flaws, but they care for their people, and will do whatever they can for them. But they also love each other, and their loyalties are often torn. Fortunately, it worked out in the end, and they didn’t have to choose, because they got both.Speaking of the ending, I will agree with other reviewers that it was…abrupt. There was all this build-up to the final battle, and then it was just…over. I’m grateful for the epilogue, otherwise it would have been a terrible ending, but I feel the author could have given more details about the battle, and then written the epilogue. There were a lot of unanswered questions. I wanted to know more about the world. What happened to Brenedil? Kona? We know that the slaves were finally freed, but there are loose threads I felt should have been tied up. The battle was anticlimactic, and there was a lot going on that didn’t get the attention it should have. This world has so much potential.That said, it was a happy ending, and, after all they went through, it was good to see that Freyrik and Ayden could stand together as equals in the eyes of others. Ayden no longer has to be seen as Rik’s slave (Rik stopped seeing him that way a long time ago, but others did not), and they can be with each other. They get their happily ever after (though I hope they can find a way to prolong Rik’s life, as he is human, and Ayden will outlive him). I love the line where Ayden says “I’ve looked into the customs of your people. You’ll be wearing the dress” (in reference to marriage). Again, I loved Ayden. As anticlimactic as the final battle was, I was glad for the happy ending, and it was proof that in all the trials they went through, Ayden and Freyrik’s love prevailed. They were tested many times. But they got to be together, to live and love.I recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy. Even if you have never been exposed to m/m relationships, give Song of the Fallen a try. It’s a great story, and the sex is balanced with plot. I picked it up, and it felt like reading a fantasy novel. Even now, I can’t stop thinking about it.

I eagerly anticipated this sequel after reading through the first book, Counterpoint, and coming up against that astonishing ending. Sometimes its not a good idea to really anticipate a book because then you're setting yourself up for disappointment, but in this case there was no disappointment. This was a strong sequel from beginning to end. Like the first one, this book challenges the emotions with many of the dark events in this odyssey-style story.This is a continuation story so needs to be read in order behind the first one.The story continues from the point where the High King or Aegis sends his emissary to bring Freyrik and Ayden to the capitol. Freyrik is under the Aegis' disapprobation because he didn't immediately send Ayden to him as a slave. Ayden is also worried about what has been going on in the capitol that keeps his brother from returning home to his own kingdom.The hardships continue for Rik and Ayden. They discover that surviving the Surge, Ayden accepting the punishment of lashes and that finding love together is not enough. Now Ayden is forced into a true slaveship with his elf magic bound while Freyrik is placed in a no win situation that makes him choose between his brother and the Aegis. Either choice will bring betrayal and disappointment. Under it all, the prince and elf still have each other and they will face an epic adventure once again- together.I don't have a wide range of knowledge when it comes to fantasy romance since this is a fairly new sub-genre for me, but I was fascinated by all the creative twists and turns that the magical world the author thought up.The plot was riveting. I was already vested since the first story, but most of the times I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't have put it down to save my life. Just when I was sure it was going to go a certain way, it twisted and took off in another direction. I loved not knowing what was going to happen next. There was a feel that certain things like a few minor characters' fates that I would have liked to have seen neatly tied up in the end because I was curious about them, but in no way did this take away from a superior plot that focused on the fate of the world and specifically the two heroes.These two heroes- Actually, I could just sit here and gush, but I doubt anyone wants to read that. Heh heh! Truthfully, I found them more than engaging and splendid examples of what a good main character should be in the first book. It just got better with the more hardships that were thrown their way in this story. They are tough and strong enough to weather the storm of life without a lot of angst, but they are also tender and there for each other when it counts.I find that this duo of stories, Counterpoint and Crescendo, are terribly easy to recommend to those who enjoy high epic fantasy adventure.

Book 2 of the Song of the Fallen is a must to read after Counterpoint. I love the captured, sassy male elf Is and the caring prince who takes him for his own. It had everything I was looking for. Humor, pain, angst, humiliation and all that there stuff. The role reversal concept was great but the end seemed kind of rushed. Rachel Haimowitz writes fantastic m/m and this book is no exception. I most definitely wish this story would have continued to Book #3 but I am happy with the ending and recommend this book most highly.

Enjoyed this book and the first, there's obviously a lot wrong that comes with writing the "master and slave fall in love" trope, but for a fun read to sate my need for gay fantasy (and elves), it did a really good job. I got really into the characters, as well, so I was sad to finish this series.

writes a good tale. I find her storytelling to be superb. I have read this twice and in another week or two I will read it again. however the only dissatisfaction i feel or felt was in how the ending was "handled", and to be honest I'm not even sure how I would have liked it to be done differently. The two main charactors, find themselves thron into a situation neither are prepared for and deal the best they can. I would recomend this story to friends and readers who like adventure with their romance

This book is great! I loved the magic system and well detailed world building. I only wish for an epilogue at least to know how things turn out for them later in life.

I enjoyed this two book series. I actually wouldn't mind another book with these characters. I loved the love story between Freyrik and Ayden.

Before I bought and read , I mentally pictured author Thomas Herold as a whistle blower warning the public of tricks being played on the people by governments and banks. (About this I was right, up to a point). I wanted to read what he had to say on his subject. As an aside, I had never heard of Mr. Herold before I came upon this book during a search for something to read.Early in the book the author calls attention to what he sees as a great inequity - one percent of the population controls fifty percent of all the wealth. He believes that the U.S. dollar is being destroyed and that the U.S. Federal Reserve (our central bank) is hiding that fact. (pg. 14). Mr. Herold states that it is his intent to show that our monetary system must be changed into one that creates wealth for everyone and not just the top one percent. (pg. 16).Next he writes a short history of money, debt and inflation that goes right on up to the credit card. Then he goes into HIS specifics of the "Destructive Results of the Current Monetary System." (pgs. 50-57). Included among them are moral decline, health decline and spiritual decline. The author also calls attention to "The Magic of Interest" and its benefits (?) to our banking system and its owners/investors. This reviewer found much interest in the author's money figures of the costs to the taxpayer of the 2008-2009 bank bailout. I suspect that other readers will too.Beginning with Chapter II Mr. Herold goes into considerable detail setting out his 21 methods by which the banking system and certain human failings "legally steal your money." He devotes just under 100 pages to this list. I found them to be informative and interesting. He caps it all off with his summary of our current monetary system, which summary can be disagreed with by reasonable persons.Next comes Chapter IV which encompasses Money and Wealth, especially wealth and it various forms. Readers might note that the author appears to have skipped Chapter III. However it soon becomes apparent that the book has two Chapter IVs. The 2nd Chap. IV goes into "Metaphysics" which includes discussions of such as "Separation vs. Oneness" and "From Fear to Love." All I can say about that is, some will find value in it and others won't. I admit that it didn't mean a lot to this reviewer.The last Chapter, (V), speaks of the future, including topics like "Universal Basic Income," and technology including crypto-currencies and bitcoins.On pgs. 261-263 is the author's "Afterword." It contains some of his thoughts pertaining to money, connectedness, and societal unfairness.My Own Perceptions. This is not at all a bad book. Readers are likely to find value in it, but might disagree on which parts are valuable. I believe that Mr. Herold is sincere in his beliefs. HOWEVER, what will cause some readers to deny that this could ever be viewed as a serious work are: The errors in spelling and punctuation. There are places where the author uses "cooperation" when I suspect that he might mean "corporation." And as already mentioned there are errors in the numbering of chapters. I am sorry that better editing and advice seem not to have been available to the author. In my opinion this could have been a better book with more attention to detail and content. (Of course the same could be said about many books that have been published).

In this book, The Money Deception, the author, Mr. Thomas Herold, raises the red flag ; He is alarmed by what is going on in our financial system which he thinks is on the verge of collapsing. Although the focus is mostly on the US the repercussions are worldwide; after all, the USA is now the dominant economic force affecting the entire world .The author is perhaps justified in declaring this warning, The financial meltdown of 2008 is still fresh in our minds, and to the author it was only the tip of the iceberg. But what other indicators are there to justify his fears? The US huge debt is a major worry especially when we discover that the Government pays in excess of $400 billion in interest on the debt - every year !! It is clear that the Government cannot go on paying such astounding amounts indefinitely. In the wake of the 2008 crisis, to save itself from bankruptcy, the US paid leading banks in excess of $16 trillion - the biggest bailout ever! This itself had a huge impact on the overall debt burden.This author (who has written ten books on finance) believes there is something desperately wrong with the current financial system. Inequality, for instance, is now greater than ever before; 82% of the wealth generated last year went to the richest 1% of the global population !! One percent of the population now controls 50% of all wealth. To add insult to injury, 23% of people over 65 live in poverty, and around 80% of those who reached retirement age say they cannot afford to retire. This is not only shocking but shameful and outright disturbing. The economic system is dangerously close to collapsing and the general public is hardly aware of it.While the author bemoans this current US system and how it is manipulated by government and banks to the disadvantage of the average citizen, he struggles to suggest better solutions for the future. The Bitcoin system, which does not require a central bank or government control, is given serious consideration. The Universal Basic Income (UBI) where a fixed salary is given to every citizen to reduce poverty and increase equality is suggested but has recently been tested in Switzerland and rejected. Other systems were also considered but seemed too far fetched for practical applications . It seems obvious that changing the current financial protocols will be a major undertaking which will take years of planning, testing and trials.(Note: Sadly, this book is riddled with spelling as well as grammatical mistakes which can be distracting).Fuad R Qubein.Apr. 2018

I’ve been taking an investors class and have been someone on a financial info binge. I feel this book is written in a way so that the average hard working citizen can understand how our Govt and banking institutions operate. We always speculate & hear stories but to see it visually broken down into valid points & arguments was very eye opening.Prior to reading this book I had just had a conversation with a colleague about how we will never be millionaires working a 9-5 and we have to plan for retirement right nowwhen we still have 30 or so years. What about what we need right now at the moment?I also got more than I expected when the author touched on our outdated educational system that does little to prepare graduates for financial freedom. In fact you actually start off in debt from college. Crazy. It’s all one big ponzu scheme.There were some grammatical errors which should be revised and reprinted as I believe this is an excellent book.

This books spits out a lot of truths that many unaware people would find very depressing. The author exposes a lot of facts pertaining to our monetary system, such as the Federal Reserve, over which we have absolutely no control. It is what it is. But you do have the ability to change your status. You do have the ability to improve your life. But do you have the desire? Do you have the drive and ambition? Half the battle of life is know what the rules are for any given situation. This book will expose rules that are in place, rules which you will not be able to change, whether you find them palatable or not. Don't waste your time applying emotion to what is being offered. Learn how to use what is being offered to better your life.
