For non-scientists, like myself, gravity is a slightly mysterious activity, when we think of it at all. The book's title says it all: A Very Short Introduction. Timothy Clifton covers the history of gravity science, present theories, and future research focus. Pretty much all non-scientists need to know about the topic. After reading the book, I have a greater understanding of how much we do not know about gravity, and that some of the current terms, such as dark matter or dark energy, might be more like placeholders as we wait for scientists to learn more about this subject.

As is usual for these Oxford short introductions, there is a lot of information in a relatively short book. My first question is what is the audience for the book? I am interested in the physical sciences so someone with that interest should find the book useful. It also seems to me that if you had a high school or college student that had an interest in physics, this would be a helpful introduction. There's not much math, which can be a deterrent for some, and if the student likes math, then the book still should pique their curiosity.Professor Chilton starts with a light touch on the ancient's view of gravity, and a light touch is all that's needed. He then begins a closer examination of gravity as interpreted by Newton first and then Einstein. The theories of these two scientific giants are deemed "classical." I was a little surprised by this characterization of Einstein's relativity theory, as I've thought of it as a progression from a clockwork universe to a statistical understanding of realityThe book looks at the scientific history that led to Einstein's breakthrough. As above, the professor doesn't let this become a history lesson. He is more interested in the science, which is good.Einstein's description of gravity as an aspect of spacetime upended the common belief in absolute space and absolute time. The historical precedent and particularly the Michelson-Morley experiment deeply informed Einstein and his break with deeply and commonly held beliefs. As I considered the audience for this book, it occurred that Einstein's characterization of "spacetime" rolls easily off my tongue, but if I was required to explain this to an intelligent and curious 12-year old, I'm not sure what I would say. The math supports the concept, but it's still difficult to describe it.The professor looks at gravity's effect on bodies in the solar system and outside the solar system. The precession of the orbit of Mercury was predicted by Einstein's theory, but not Newton's . The effect was small, but it was the first validation of Einstein's theory. The extrasolar tests of gravity came from searching for and finding large, dense objects outside the solar system such as pulsars, binary pulsars, white dwarf stars and other objects to look for the effect of gravity on light and electromagnetism.The author describes many experiments from the 16th century to as recently as 2014 to examine their methodologies and findings on the effect of gravity. He also looks at the types of new equipment being constructed at the present time to assist scientists in their ongoing efforts to understand gravity. So, he looks not only at the past, but also at scientific equipment under construction for use in the near future.The most interesting part of the book arises when he looks at the effect of quantum mechanics on cosmology and gravity. Einstein's theory of relativity and quantum mechanics have both been proven experimentally, but the two theories are not consistent. The professor describes efforts to harmonize the two theories. The efforts at harmonization seem strained, but scientists seem to believe that quantum mechanics offers a more complete explanation of physics and relativity, like Newton's laws, offers a more limited explanation.The author does a good job of offering a great deal of information in the short introduction format. The cosmology section is fascinating. If you or someone you know has an interest in physics, I recommend the book highly.

It also explains where and what types of habitats they can be found in such as jungles, and deserts. It displays their beautiful scale colored wings and explains that they are created for disguise from predators, and that they are also classified into different families based on their color schemes. Children will also learn what their diets consist of, and how each butterfly goes through different stages as it progresses throughout it's life span. Julie Murray has published over forty books within this series and each book is about insects or animals around the world. In Butterflies, as well as in her other series, she provides children with numerous ways to expand their knowledge in a fun and interesting way. Was so gripping and enthralling, the way she presents the factual details, I read the whole thing in one sitting. Mystery fans, I recommend this book. Great beach/pool reading!

Ann Rule is the queen of true crime. Sadly, she passed away this year. The I-5 Killer was written by her under a pen name…Andy Stack…when she was getting started as a true crime writer. It was thought that a female writer would not be accepted in the true crime drama. The nerve! Ann Rule proved them all wrong.The I-5 Killer is story of Andy Woodfield. As with all Ann Rule books, The I-5 Killer chronicles Woodfield's early life and his decline into cold blooded killer as well as the investigation and the investigators that led to his capture. Woodfield was a killer of women...good looking on the outside, super creepy on the inside. It is fascinating that many serial killers can carry on somewhat normal relationships in addition to their extracurricular activity. Woodfield is no exception.

I love all the Ann Rule books I've read. This one included (I'm still reading it). It's hard to put down! (I have the kindle edition, so I don't really put it down, but rather X out of the window, lol). True crime stories scare me, and this is no exception. Hard to believe the evil that exists in this world. I like that she gives a lot of information about the victims, not just the perpetrator. Very easy read, not dumbed down or anything, but she puts the words together to weave such a believable and intricate narrative.

Another true crime story by Author, Ann Rule. A detailed account of a serial killer who stalked Interstate I-5 during the 1970's on the Southern Coast of the United States. This book is an excellent read for those of you who are in law enforcement or field of phycology. It details the crimes and delves into the mental state of the actual killer. The book contains actual photos of the killer, victims, and law enforcement who eventually tracked-down and brought this killer to justice. The photos are not graphic crime scene photos of victims.

This book is about a serial murderer along the I-5 corridor along the Pacific Northwest. Once again, Ann Rule delivers a thorough, suspenseful true crime novel. It's especially interesting to me because my mother was neighbors with the woman from Redding who was murdered, so it has a personal connection to me and mine.It focuses much more on the investigation than the killer's story, which I found wonderful and fascinating. If you enjoy suspense, drama, and/or crime novels, this chilling true story should be on your bookshelf!

It was not exciting as other books I've that kept me on the edge of my seat. I like books with full details and while some parts of the book were detailed, it just didn't bring the interest I desired. not worth reading again.

Shortly into this one, I realized that I had already read it. Liking Rule's work, I re-read it anyway. It is old enough that an update at the end would be welcome. (Much of it takes place in the early 1980's.) It follows the behavior and delusions of a dangerous man whom the police finally captured and the legal system successfully prosecuted.

I have read a few Ann Rule books (one of my favorite authors) especially her earlywork & this one did not dissapoint. She has a certain way of writing about a horriblesubject that is not gory but does not skip details & never glorifies the killer & alwayshas the reader to keep in mind that these are innocent victims & the toll it takes on their friends& loved ones......
