I'm sorry for anyone who needs this book.But hopefully you also find it very helpful. I started reading just weeks after my son lost his battle with cancer. It's now been 5 months, and I just finished reading. So much of what I struggled with are expressed by these moms, which is sad but comforting. They provided real life applications to tough situations that I was better prepared for because of their words (How to handle holidays, for example!)

The book gave me new insight into being supportive to a friend who has lost an adult daughter. I now know I should never expect my friend to be "normal" again, but there are many ways I can still help.

I saw myself in this book, and I can relate to their experiences. It hits the "nail on the head" in all areas while trying to live day to day, as I too am trying to live after losing my only child. I'm so happy to know that I'm not alone grieving a child in the same ways that only we (grieving mothers) can understand. God Bless!

I lost my son on New Year's Eve and was sort of lost. I did not want to go to any sort of therapy or group meetings; I have always been a shy person. My husband suggested finding a book and I found this one. As I read it, I discovered that many of the little things that I could not do were written in these pages.This book allowed me to know that the way I was feeling was ok and that there is no timetable for grief. I kept thinking that after 6 months I should feel better, but the women in this book made me realize that the grief does not go away; you just learn to manage it in whatever way you can.Anyone who has lost a child should read this book; no matter how you are grieving, you will find that one of these nine women have probably felt the same things and it really is comforting to know that you are not the only one and that you are not going just a little crazy.

This book meant so much to me, as I lost my daughter six years ago when she was 21. Truly, you can never know how it feels until it has happened to you. I don't ever want anyone to feel the pain and loss that I still feel to this very day, but it is good to understand that I am not the first, nor will I be the last to have this happen. I feel like I can listen better to someone who has gone through this. Yes, you do finally get "Beyond Tears", but the pain is always there.

Got this from the library and knew within a few pages I needed my own copy. Grief when you lose a child is crushing. I found myself nodding and saying " yes, that's how it feels". They get it, no matter how YOU feel after this kind of loss, one of these 9 women have been there.

I lost my son in a car accident 4 months ago. Reading helps me. This has been the most helpful book.

I give this book a solid 3 stars. I would have gone for 4, but for the repitition. It's almost as if the chapters were lectures spread over several years and, of course, he had to cover the same ground again. The fact that they are so disjointed is a give away. Either that or he has Alzheimer's.The first 2/3 of the book are aimed at writers. I know this because the sticky notes don't appear in my copy until about page 200. And even then they make only a brief appearance. And, speaking of sticky notes, I could list the key points on a small one. But, if you're a writer, there's a lot to be gleaned from that first two thirds. As a writer myself, it's worth a re-read or two.The take away is that novels are products of their times and none exist in a vacuum. So when you read Toni Morrison, say, you're reading a novel based on her experience in her time, plus all the novels she's ever read, and all the novels those writers read, and so on. He makes several other, thought-provoking points, but I don't want to be a spoiler.Still, generally speaking, it's a good read by an entertaining writer. A bit too entertaining at times, even a bit, er, jaunty - but then he warned us.Bottom line is that if you're a writer read the whole thing a couple of times. You may even want to take a few notes. Otherwise, jump in at page 200.

This will give you an excellent framework for evaluating a novel you're reading. Great if you're in a book club and can never think of things to say.

Foster's earlier book, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, was a favorite. I think I like this one even better. From his thoughts on what constitutes a novel to the discussion of the evolution of the novel, Foster is entertaining, thought-provoking, literate, engaging. More than anything else, I am inspired to re-examine some novels (100 Years of Solitude, A Plague of Doves, Flaubert's Parrot) that I found too daunting, but now seem slightly more accessible. I would love it if everyone in my book club read How to Read Novels....I think it would help our discussions move beyond "I liked it" or "I hated it".

I loved Professor Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines, but this second installment feels more like a sequel than a standalone guide. The chapters here read like "leftovers" for what he didn't cover in the previous work. For instance, an entire chapter is dedicated to the literary importance of chapter breaks in reading novels--not exactly groundbreaking stuff.Further, the information in the book could be presented in about 30 pages. The information is presented in the first paragraph of each chapter, propped up with about 9 pages of fluff and discussion of specific novels, then summarized in the concluding paragraph. Highlighting the key points and skipping the fluff, I made it through this book in about two hours.Do yourself a favor and pick up How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines if you really want to learn a thing or two about reading literature.

Really practical perspectives for educators to give students a leg up in understanding challenging literature.

Mr. Foster does know how to get a reader interested and at the same time he knows how to teach by means of words. I felt as if I had been attending one of his classes. He knows how to foster interest in contemporary literature as well as to lead you to classical works. I consider this book a "must" for anybody interested in literature as a career. Two thumbs up!!!

This book and the other similar one by the same author How to Read Literature Like a Professor totally changed my daughter's life in high school English. She said it was clear, well written and explained what it was she should be looking for as she was doing reading assignments. Highly recommend this book--maybe the other title even more since it is about literature in general.

Excellent book! It really opened my eyes in terms of reading novels. Great for non-English majors. I enjoyed the discussions of the origins of the novel, the ideas of themes,philosophy and culture behind novels and the concept of novels "speaking to each other" on the same subject through history.This book makes me appreciate literature more!

I needed this for a media class I took. The book was really comprehensive and had a lot of good information. However, there was so much of it that it was really overwhelming and hard to decide which style I should use. If you're into the media this book is definitely one you need. An older edition would probably work fine since not a whole lot changes year to year.

Whether your a journalist for Time magazine, the New York Times or simply a hobby journalist, this Associated Press Style book works extremely well, but the 2014, the latest AP style book would be even better, but this 2-year- old AP style book is still worth its weight in gold.

I highly recommend this book to anyone not only interested in learning about Yellowstone National Park, but also about the life and hardships of the explorers. The book tells a colorful story of adventure in words and pictures and interesting inserts give the reader an opportunity to learn more about specific subjects the author brings up in the story. All in all a well-written fun read. I hope this is just the first in a series of books on our national parks that Ms. Peabody has planned!

I know the author. We drink beer together a couple times a week. She's knowledgeable regarding the subject matter and isn't afraid to put pen to paper when it moves her! It's an easy read, not text-bookish. Very enjoyable! I could go on and on, but she'd likely not appreciate it -so I won't.Buy the book...

I read this book when I took my SAT's a few years ago, and I would like to think it greatly boosted my scores. It really gives you shortcuts and strategies that easily raise your scores. In regards to the mathematics section, most learned individuals have learned all the math required on the SAT by the 9th grade at latest. So really, even if these people possess the right knowledge, the SAT's timing limits how many questions they can answer. "Hack the SAT" really improved the time it took me to complete the math section (yielding a score above 750).I bought this book for my brother specifically, and he solely used this book (in conjunction with practice tests) to retake his SAT; here were the improvements:Reading: +90 pointsMathematics: +30 pointsWriting: +100 pointsSo clearly we see across the board improvement through use of this book. He experienced less math improvement than I did when I took the exam, but both of us had fairly high math scores to begin with, so we're bound to see less improvement on that section.

This book is written by a fellow Harvard Grad who lives and works as a private tutor in New York. It's in the same vein as "Up Your Score": a lighthearted, humorous take on the SAT. Instead of trying to tackle everything on the test, Mr. Schrefer instead focuses on providing quick, useful tips and shortcuts, with a particular emphasis on the math section. All in all, it's worth the ten bucks.

This is not a perfect book, but the reason that it deserves five stars is because it is an excellent book to get started with. I took the SAT 25 years ago and I remember sitting down with the Barron's SAT guide, and wondering how I would get through this unfriendly, phone book sized beast. The Barron's approach to problem solving was dry and methodical: reading it would trigger narcoleptic attacks. I was disappointed that the Barron's approach did not seem concerned with presenting solutions that could be completed in one and two minute time spans (skipping and combining math steps can change a three minute question to a one minute question). This book is a practical, light-hearted and casual view of the Test which makes it easier to follow along and more importantly FINISH.There are a few typo's and I hope the author has a chance to issue a second edition of this book. For folks who are taking the test, I would suggest bringing a set of foam ear plugs (available at drug stores) to the test. I sat next to someone chewing gum, coughing, sneezing and nervously tapping her pencil.

Recommended by a friend, whose daughter benefited from every strategy discussed in this book. Got over 2000, not bad for first try. Loved vocab word for each page.

I bought this book because I thought the beginning was hilarious. Just about any adult could relate to a tale of too much drink, the change it makes on personality, and the morning after regret. And it was presented with self-deprecating humor. But then the humor quickly becomes juvenile and mean-spirited. Max's idea of fun is getting drunk with his equally shallow friends, getting into bar fights, and objectifying/demeaning women in the process.Ugh. Just a little of that kind of joking from this immature, egotistical, man-child goes a long way. Couldn't finish it. Didn't want to. Glad I got it on a Kindle promo, but regret buying it nonetheless.

Tucker Max, of "Assholes Finish First" has a hilarious, crude, and offensive lifestyle, but that's what makes Tucker...well, Tucker. The stories he tells are reminiscent of my wilder college days, but on crack and complete loss of inhibition. If you want to be in a constant fit of tears and laughter while reading a book, this book is for you.WARNING: This book is not for the sensitive prude, if you are easily offended by vivid sexual descriptions, alcohol abuse, bodily fluids, drugs and complete mismanagement of all those I listed; this book is not for you.

I read this book as a recommendation from a friend and thought it was pretty hilarious. I did find myself skimming at times to get through some of the boring stuff and find the entertaining parts of the stories. This guy is vulgar and explicit and that's exactly what I expected when picking this book up. Don't read this if you're going to get all offended over how he talks about women (he's very degrading!) or how he discusses his sexual and drunken experiences in vivid detail. I'm a woman and took it for what it was - true stories written by a guy who considers himself to be a jerk.

Tucker Max is candid, funny, and completely without hypocrisy as he recounts his escapades dragging out of bars girls approximately as drunk as he is.He reminds me of Hunter Thompson, who became a disappointment as he degenerated from being a real journalist. Teenage boys were swept along reading him because he talked such entertaining trash about his dissolute lifestyle - alcohol, the many drugs of the 1970s, playing with guns. That increasingly became the focus of his writing. He maintained the pretense of being a political journalist, railing about Nixon and fascism to keep that up, while spending Rolling Stone’s money like a drunken sailor. He spent less and less time observing anything or interviewing anyone, and as such had less and less to say.Max doesn’t care about politics and actually sustains writing about being a degenerate better than Thompson did. I compare the two because Thompson’s most popular book was “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Max has a chapter here about a debauch in Vegas, which reminded me of that. Like Thompson, Max is from Kentucky, with a similar good ole boy touch in his writing.Max is upfront that he’s writing solely about drinking, chasing women, and getting into the kind of trouble the young get into, trouble they’ll recall fondly as codgers sitting by the fire. He knows he’s an a-hole, he’s shameless about it, and he regularly reminds you of it in case you were about to forget it.Max has a great sense of humor and written delivery. Watching him and his fellow law students - Slingblade, El Bingeroso, PWJ, Hate, Credit and company - get trashed and search for easy women is endlessly entertaining.They don’t have to search very hard. Welcome to Hookup Culture, where the girls are as drunk and trashy as the boys. The more Max needles or insults girls, the likelier they seem to sleep with him. Go figure.Max is irrepressibly optimistic about his ability to pick up women. It is important to observe, in the Age of Weinstein, that the sexual landscape Max depicts is diametrically opposed to the one consisting of scary traumas inflicted on fragile snowflakes by big bad horndogs who LOOK at their BREASTS.Here, we see an hordes of young women hanging out in bars with their girlfriends, engaging in the badinage and banter Max excels at, getting as ridiculously drunk as he does, finding him more and more entertaining as he insults them more and more, and all with the goal of getting laid. After Max begins his website, publishes his first book and goes on a booksigning tour, college girls, knowing who he is, actually clamor to hook up with him.Those who think the sexual revolution was a contribution to humanity might want to read this. This is what Hookup Culture really looks like and this is what the sexual revolution wrought. Sexual revolutionaries: proud of yourselves? Men will sniff after sex wherever it might be available, and the more they think it’s available the cruder and more direct they’ll get. Hold Max in contempt if you want, but he doesn’t care. For young men, Hooking Up is the coin of the realm.

If your sense of humor is a bit dark and you can laugh at an alcoholic womanizing guy tell you all about his sexual escapades, then this book is for you. Tucker Max is one of the funniest authors out there then again I tend to lean towards the dark, messed up humor... you know the kind that leaves you asking your self "should I be laughing at this?" Its a really easy read because most of it is short stories that are all connected with primarily the same characters - Obviously Tucker (he's the star of his story) and a handful of his friends and the guest character is always some girl.... and he wrote every embarrassing detail. Treat yourself to a good laugh

Disgusting, but a guilty pleasure. I read this years ago, I was disgusted and yet laughing my @ss off at the same time. Definitely not a book for the light hearted, but if you are in your early 20's or can remember your early 20's and those years were filled with partying and stupid misadventures that you reflect fondly upon or are currently in the midst of - this book might be for you. Take note ladies, this guy is a misogynist pig, the things he does to women will disgust you, but then again - there are some laugh out loud, tears running down your face moments that make the read worth it.

I have a friend that said these books were awesome. I finally bought it since he kept talking it up. Its basically a "bro" to put it nicely. Sharing stories. I don't understand how this book won my friend over. I could see it appealing for young guys in their youth who have not had a chance to make their own life stories. But I did not enjoy this book whatsoever. I read better stories on reddit under r/askreddit.

I was drawn to this story by the concept, as someone who grew up with harem anime and rom coms I could see fun paths a story like this could do... It does keep to the idea it presents to an extent. The Author is clearly a fan of the genre and is having fun writing a fluffy, ultimately silly story. Perhaps it's me who was hoping for a deeper cut into the tropes of the genre instead of playing them fairly straight. But I was underwhelmed...Characters are very flat, and dialog is very stilted and awkward. They all lean so heavily into their tropes that none of them feel real, even compared to the kind of characters their meant to be representing from anime/manga. Everyone speaks in very formal stiff ways much of the times that does not flow well. Conversations often feel more like characters taking turns to monologue then a real conversation. I'm also personally not a fan of the 'script' format of dialog in stories but that one is a matter of preference.Characterization in specificTomo and his family are probably the worst offenders of this their all so over the top (especially Kana, whose stick wore thin REAL fast). They never seemed to feel like a family at all, even an eccentric one like this story is trying to portray... Considering their all technically 'side characters' in this pseudo-anime series where Hiro is the dense main character you could argue that's fine but since they are much more in focus as Tomo is the other lead it really hurts any scene with the family...Mina is another very inconsistent character whose characterization swears back and forth in ways that make it hard to follow. By the end it's framed that's she's come out in a more positive light but her two faced turn was played too hard that the rebound back just fell flat with me... I would argue that this series wouldn't need a 'childhood friend' girl in the harem since Tomo would be taking over that role shortly after but that might just be a narrative preference.Ironically The Chapters from Hiro's perspective work quite well and despite being constantly lauded as the 'generic main character-kun' he's the only one I that felt like a real character... He had some depth to him, his insecurities and loyalty to his friend are shown well... it's not perfect but it definitely rang truer then anyone else in the cast.Tomo him/herself was set up initially as the 'only sane man' or 'side character B' but actually feels more like the infallible LN protagonist Hiro suppose to spoof on. The book hammers on how pretty, kind and intelligent they are to death, it's more then a bit much. There are moments, particularly with Hiro that it works okay, some parts of the amusement park were nice... but there were too many moment that took me out rather then in. By the end of the book she's got many shades of the Sue varietyOverallI don't regret purchasing this book, for what I spent it was an okay read for a free afternoon. I've read worse stories but I've definitely read better. Ultimately at the end of the day it made me think of everything I was hoping the story would be but wasn't(which I will spar this review as that's hardly relevant to actually product). Maybe I'll come back to this series later down the line and try another volume to see if things have improved but for now I'm bowing out at Volume 1.

It's lengthy like most light novels or manga that usually get some kind of anime adaptation or live action adaptation. It kind of also speaks to me as if it really wishes to be seen as a parody of sorts when reading it. But of course, I know this isn't the first time someone has attempted to poke fun at these tropes in manga or anime. So, I'll properly judge it after a nice read through it.Final: Wow I really enjoyed this book. I think maybe because it's that romance and fluff I enjoy so much.(I guess I need to actually accept it as another one of my guilty pleasure genres.)Also yeah this book pokes some fun at the harem cliches and tropes, but really focuses most on being a fun gender-bend romance story. And I can totally see this may be becoming a live-action drama series or anime if it wasn't more addressed to the Western audience.But I would also like to say that the author he did a good job and is clearly very familiar with anime tropes, light novels, and the romance genre surrounding anime.And lastly, I will say that I look forward to the next installment in the story.Recommends to:If you liked The Hentai Prince and The Stony Cat Volume 1 you'll find a few similar themes here and there are a few others I could recommend but this one has a very similar trigger to what this story does.Hope you enjoyed my review!! This is an enjoyable quick read, suitable for age 12 or so and up ( I'm 37). Definitely hits all the expected tropes, with anime style descriptions and character archetypes. I'll probably read it again, along with a sequel.Minor criticisms: Could use a little proofreading, but much better than a lot of Kindle books out there. The dialogue wasn't incorporated into the rest of the text, but was set off into separate paragraphs with the speaker's name in brackets at the beginning. I think it would greatly improve this book by using things like "he said", "she cried", etc.Major criticism: I felt like the gender swap was kind of underplayed. The mc has about one day of angst about suddenly becoming a girl, and then is completely okay with it. Getting registered for school was a bigger deal than "holy crap, I'm a girl!". A little more depth there would have been cool.And that's as deep and thoughtful as I'm going to get about a light novel, unless I get asked to do so.
