Andrew Davidson Talks About Becoming a Writer Some of what follows is true. When I was about seven, I had a turtle named Stripe. I decided, because I liked my turtle and Jacques Cousteau, that I wanted to be a marine biologist. This ambition lasted until I was ten years old, when I spent a year gazing into the abyss, hoping that the abyss would not gaze back at me. At eleven, I longed for a master to teach me the secrets of the ninja, but the teacher did not appear; this probably means that as a student I was not ready. As I entered my teens, I set my heart upon becoming a professional hockey player. On weekend nights, the final game at the local arena ended around 10 p.m. but the icemaker was unable to leave the building until about midnight, as he had to clean the dressing rooms and do maintenance. I bribed him with presents of Aqua Velva aftershave to let me play alone on the rink until he headed home. Despite my devotion, I never developed the skills to make it off the small-town rink and into the big leagues. My dream shattered, at sixteen I started to spend more time writing. I began by changing the lyrics to Doors songs. I rewrote "Break On Through" so that it became "Live to Die": "Soldier in the forest / dodging bullets thick / only took one / to make him cry / All of us just live to die." Clearly, writing was my future. I soon realized that, since I still had no authorial voice of my own, I should at least imitate better poets than Jim Morrison. Soon I was word-raping Leonard Cohen, e.e. cummings, Sylvia Plath, William Blake, and John Milton. After writing much abusively derivative poetry, I moved onto stage plays written in a mockery of the style of Tennessee Williams, which also didn’t work out so well. Next, I tried to put baby in a corner, until it was explained to me that nobody puts baby in a corner. Following this, I produced short stories that would have been much better if they were much shorter. Then, screenplays that even Alan Smithee wouldn’t direct. Somewhere along the way, I managed to get a degree in English Literature; this was strange, as I thought I was studying cardiology. Undaunted, off to Vancouver Film School I went, but naturally not to study film. Instead, I took the new media course, because there was this thing called the internet that was just taking off. I also spent a fair amount of time using digital editing software for video and audio. An example project: I slowed down the final movement to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, looped it backwards, put in a heavy drumbeat, and end up with a funeral dirge. "Ode to Joy"? I think not. "Ode to Bleakness" is more like it; I was very deep, and showed it by destroying joy. After this course finished, I had tens of thousands of dollars of student debt, and could no longer avoid getting a job. I soon discovered, in no uncertain terms, that work is no fun. I stuck it out for as long as I could, which was way less than a lifetime. As my thirtieth birthday approached, I became incredibly aware that I had never lived abroad, so I moved to Japan. I had no idea if I would like Japan, but I vowed to stick it out for a year. I did, and then another year, and another, and another, and another. In the beginning, I worked as a kind of substitute teacher of English, covering stints in classrooms that needed a temporary instructor. I lived in fifteen different cities during my first two years, traveling from the northern island of Hokkaido all the way down to the southern island of Okinawa. It was a great introduction to the country, but eventually the constant relocation became too much. I got a job in a Tokyo office, writing English lessons for Japanese learners on the internet. I lived in the big city for three years, and loved it: hooray for sushi, hooray for sumo, and hooray for cartoon mascots. While in Japan, I entertained myself by writing and, having already mangled poetry, short stories, stage plays and screenplays, I thought it was time to give a novel a shot. A strange thing happened: I found that I don’t write like other people when it comes to novels—or at least, none of which I know. It’s true that I’ve read comparisons of my novel to a number of other books—The Name of the Rose, The English Patient, The Shadow of the Wind—but I haven’t read any of them. (To my great shame, really, and I suppose I should. Since they are my supposed influences, I should become familiar with them. I’ll appear more intelligent in interviews.) I liked writing The Gargoyle, and I think I’ll write another novel. If I can, I’ll make up new characters and a new plot. That’s my plan.

BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN! I buy copies in bulk so I may gift it to others. Its this insane tale of a guy who is basically a terrible person. He gets into the most elegantly written hell fire of a car wreck and is no longer viewing himself as human after his 'member' is gone. While he is being terrible to all the endearing hospital staff a lady from the psych ward comes over and insists on telling him about her 7 hearts and how he is hers. All of his other drug addled mates abandon him rather quickly so for the sake of some company (any company) he listens to her 7 stories over the span of the book, each one thrusting you into past life regressions and even Dantes Inferno. READ THIS BOOK! Its perfect. I am not the only person passing out copies to everyone. Its life changing, rich, historical, dramatic, exciting, and terrifying. Andrew Davidson is doing a disservice to humanity by not putting out another book out, because after you read this you'll be desperate for more.

This was a fascinating book, weaving what would seem to be incongruous stories into a seamless, well written and incredibly well researched novel. What a mix of genres: Realistic fiction, historical fiction, tragedy, romance, magic realism, suspense, mystery, drama. Realistic, imaginative, intelligent and thought provoking. Memorable. Loved it.

Amazing Book!!! Yasmine Yousaf (Krewella) Favorite Book. If she recommended the book. It must be amazing! Fictional story, but the authors only book Andrew Davidson has ever written. It kind of feels like it could of been a biography of His life. Amazing work!!! A must read for you to believe what i am talking about. Long story short. No spoilers trust me. The very first part of the book. Maybe 40 pages in it gets really specific and detailed on what is happening to this one character. But, the story is definitely a page turner for sure.

I read this book in 2 days I just couldn't put it down it was not what I expected it's not actually about any gargoyles it's about this man's journey through life he was living one lifestyle ended up living a different lifestyle there's a little bit of a fantasy in there but it's mostly pretty straightforward about how this guy transforms his life after a tragedy. There is a bit of a horror aspect to it so you have to kind of like some of the darker stuff as well it was right up my alley and I loved it

This is a story that takes place in the present. The main character is a guy who was reluctantly raised by various people because his mother died when he was young. He was very bright and found comfort in books. At at an early age he was on his own and made his living in the adult film industry.The book starts out with his having a car accident. In the hospital he meets Marianne who may or may not be schizophrenic. She tells him that she has known him through several reincarnations. The book is filled with her stories of his past life. He doesn't believe her, but she gives him the will to live and stays with him during his long recovery.Eventually part of him does believe her. I would have preferred if he totally believed her, but she is the first and only person he has ever loved.I'm not big on love stories, but this was a wonderful book. I highly recommend it.

I did not expect this book to be as good as it is. How it was written like a diary and how honest the character was.I liked how the author was very meticulous with the burn treatment. It was factual and it really helped me understand the severity of the character's situation and what he was going through. And it wasn't just the physical side, the mental and emotional side was also very nicely written that it coincided with the whole ordeal he was going through."Accidents ambush the unsuspecting, often violently, just like love."I liked the odd love story of this book. How it's unadulterated love that Marianne felt and worked to it until the end. It was painful reading her struggle rather than the burn part which was quite odd but good because it was unexpected and gave it a sort of twist."I do not believe in any God that considers love to be a sin.""I am not a hero in soul and never will be, but I am better than I was. Or so I tell myself; and for now, that is enough.""If you cannot love the pain, you can at least love the lesson it teaches.""All the while, I'm composing in my mind. These pages that you have now read, most of them originated at my lonely command post at the edge of the world where the earth falls into the sea. I have spent much time there, in this grand empty space between memory and desire, creating this cracked empire of sentences in which I now live."

Sure, the authors of the book aren't being modest, but they aren't lying. Other books I have looked at contain maybe one good song and a bunch that nobody has heard of. Every page in this book has a recognizable title and they all are contained in the index in the beginning (which lists them alphabetically and by genre). The words and notes are easy to read and the pages stay open because of its strong binding. I believe, and thus I am writing, that this is the best fake book and it is good for beginners and experts.

Book not very good shape. Cover falling off. Not described as having this problem.

I am using this book now for programs I give for nursing homes. The only thing I disliked was that it fell apart. However, I now have it in 3 notebooks and it is working out very well. I will use this book a lot.

I consider this book to be an outstanding value for the money. No matter what your age, you will find some songs that you know. The book is BIG, and that is both a plus and a minus. What I did was to split the book into three parts, but first copy the table of contents so you can place it in each section. It's just to big to thumb through and to set on the piano while you are playing. The plus side of this is that you have hundreds and hundreds of songs to choose from.I have several fake books, and I use this one more than any of them. Look over the index of songs before you buy, and see if there are enough songs that you know. I'm sure you will find enough songs to keep you busy for many months. I use this for piano, so I can't address how useful this is to guitar players and others.Remember, this is a book that uses chords. You play chords with the left, and the melody with the right hand. There is no bass clef.

My hair stood when I played "Just the way you are" with Billy Joels original chords. If you were born in the 60s/70s you will love this book. It contains songs like Honesty, Dont let the sun do down on me, Unchained melody, You decorated my life. If you aint familiar with the song all you have to do is download it from the net, copy it on a floppy and play it on your keyboard. Then you can choose an appropriate beat and bang away. The book is very heavy...litreally.

I put 4 stars for those suspicious of 5 stars but would give 6 if I could. Rather than get into the condition like her most watch Utube video on Dyslexia, this book is a practical guide to taking action. It could save a parent and a child from the shared nightmare of confusion and despair so many families like mine have experienced. While parents need to focus on navigating the ill - equipped and less than helpful school system, dyslexia in school remains problematic and our most vulnerable do not get the "free and appropriate education". Even with the programs offered by law if you advocate, school remains a predicament for parents and Dyslexic thinkers. I can't wait to hear more from Kelley she brings honesty to a dilemma dominate by distress and deception.

This book has a wealth of information for someone who is just starting the process of having a child tested for dyslexia. My book is full of tabs, underlines, sticky notes of things I need to do as a parent. I can't tell you the amount of times I said that's my son or how could I have missed this connection to dyslexia when he was in _ grade. As I followed making my binder, my letter to the school really came together because I was reminded of all the struggles my child has been through since elementary school now that we finally put 2 and 2 together in 8th grade.

Love this book! It is wonderful. I wish I had it 4 years ago when I started fighting our school to recognize our daughter as dyslexic. It took until 4th grade, and an outside evaluation to get her diagnosed. I really wish I had known that I could have requested an IEP because I never agreed with the school's diagnosis and I always knew my dyslexia was the only diagnosis that put ALL the pieces together. I recommend this book to everyone I run across who has a child with a suspected LD!

I recently attended a conference where Dr. Kelli Sandman Hurley spoke along with her colleagues Tracy Block-Zaretsky, and, Linguist, Gina Cooke.We received a Dyslexia diagnosis for our young child and, as a mom, I found myself struggling to understand not only her diagnosis but how to get her the services she needed both within the public school system and tutoring outside of the school.Dr. Sandman-Hurley's book is one of encouragement...the path can seem bleak and lonely as we've attempted to navigate educating our school regarding Dyslexia. Gina Cooke spoke at the conference regarding understanding the meaning behind each word within the written language. Do you know why there is a in sign? When given the knowledge of a word and its root, origin, meaning, and how it connects to so many other word families, a Dyslexic child begins to soar in their understanding. When a dyslexic child experiences success...the confidence that brims is beautiful.There are many books and people 'claiming' to be beacons within the Dyslexia community. These ladies are the hands and feet working tirelessly on behalf of children everywhere struggling. Dr. Sandman-Hurley and her colleagues are paving the way for change and understanding. If you are at a loss, struggling with "now what"...buy this book. This book was just the crash course that we needed leading up to our child's IEP meeting. Dyslexia is a field fraught with confusion and misconceptions. Kelli's Sandman-Hurley's book provides much needed guidance for parents (and advocates) to better understand dyslexia and begin the process of educating those in your child's school. I particularly appreciated her granular insights into how morphemes, graphemes, and other subtleties of language that influence reading, as well as her template goals and reference to salient legal documents in easy and accessible terms.

My son is a bit too young right now to understand what’s in the book. But it will be there when he is. I’ve read it personally, and couldn’t be more happy with the writing, topics, and overall structure for conveying the history, culture and beauty of the Philippines.I have several Filipino history books, which are appropriate for adults. I bought them while staying on the islands.I have been married to a Filipino for almost three years now, and I’ve been to the Philippines on four separate occasions. My stay would probably total close to 100 days. I love history and culture. My wife and I have been to many of the museums, art galleries, several history tours around the Manila area and a couple trips to other places on the island and to other islands.What a well done book.

I am first generation American and both my parents are from the Philippines. I Love that I found this book for my son. He is half Filipino and half American. I want to make sure he learns about his Filipino side and this book is great teaching the basics. This has also helped my two American step-daughters learn and understand about the Filipino culture they are surrounded by when they come over to my parent's house.

What a superb introduction to the Philippines for children! Gidget Jimenez does a remarkable job of explaining the diversity of this multi-island nation using three cousins who describe differences and similarities in their daily lives, favorite foods, culture and religions. She synthesizes pertinent history, geography, environmental and cultural issues in a nuanced, but very kid friendly way. Filippino words, games and recipes are sprinkled throughout. This would be easy reading for grade school kids, but parents, grandparents and teachers could read this appealing book to younger kids and they would gain so much. I will wager many adults will learn quite a bit, as I did. Corazon Dandan-Albano's illustrations welcome the reader into the text, with a whimsical appealing charm. This book belongs in schools and libraries everywhere.

My daughter is doing a report on The Philippines and so ordered this book. It's very nice, not just boring "history" but draws the child in so they can imagine what it would be like to live in The Philippines and is interesting for them (and me too)! Good for all ages, up to 7th or 8th grade. Even has recipes that we are going to try!
