About the Author

Peter J. Wallison holds the Arthur F. Burns Chair in Financial Policy Studies and is co-director of AEIÂ’s program on Financial Policy Studies. From June 1981 to January 1985, he was General Counsel of the United States Treasury Department, where he had a significant role in the development of the Reagan Administration's proposals for deregulation in the financial services industry. His most recent book is Bad History, Worse Policy: How a False Narrative about the Financial Crisis Led to the Dodd-Frank Act (AEI Press 2013).He testifies frequently before committees of Congress, and is a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages of the Wall Street Journal and other print and online journals. He has also been a speaker at many conferences on financial services, housing, the causes of the financial crisis, the Dodd-Frank Act, accounting, and corporate governance, and is a member of the Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee, the Council on Foreign Relations, the SEC Advisory Committee on Improvements to Financial Reporting (2008), co-Chair of the Pew Financial Reform Task Force (2009), and a member of the congressionally- authorized Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (2009-2011). One of the best - perhaps the best - explanation of the financial collapse of 2008.Most "explanations" of the cause of the crash are really a description of "What" happened: packages of mortgages (which contained some bad stuff) being traded between banks and others, which led to a financial collapse, which led to an economic downturn.In his book Peter Wallison takes us back to what created the circumstances for the mortgage meltdown: The government policies - under both Clinton and Bush II - that forced the lowering of underwriting standards, in the intent of increasing homeownership. This resulted in a higher and higher percentage of subprime mortgages (the bad stuff). Without so much of the "bad stuff" in the mix, there could not have been the "mortgage meltdown". This book demonstrates that the subprime mortgages, almost by definition,were bound to fail. Wallison gives us one very telling statistic, for 30 years - right up to 1992, when the government push to issue subprime began - the US percent of home ownership was constant at 64%. By June 2008, it was slightly above 69%. Now, after the past six years of recession and foreclosures, it is back at the historic 64%. The subprimes made all the difference.Bankers and Economists are not the only readers who will benefit from this book. The casual reader will find very helpful thedefinitions and explanations of the terms that are batted around so freely by politicians and the "talking heads" on TV; Sub-Prime and Prime for starters. This truly is a book for all investors, homeowners, and taxpayers.

The lion’s work of my multi-year project reviewing all of the post-financial crisis books which I felt warranted review is long past, and my focus now is on my own work on the subject, targeting a 2017 release. The high volume of post-2008 books came between 2009 and 2011, and a few relevant stragglers entered the fray since then. Certainly the most noteworthy of the “latecomer” books on the crisis are the 2015 work of Peter Wallison, Hidden in Plain Sight: What Really Caused the World’s Worst Financial Crisis and Why it Could Happen Again. I refer to the work as noteworthy because it is a fine book with a highly valid contribution to the study of the crisis’ causation, but also because Wallison was an actual member of the government’s Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, a preposterous waste of taxpayer money assembled by Congress in July 2009 to thoroughly investigate the crisis and its causes. It was not just a waste of money because the commission’s findings got everything wrong (Wallison admirably was the sole dissenter from the commission’s pre-baked conclusions), but also because the whole pre-text for the inquiry was to guide changes in policy that could stem the tide in the future. The Obama administration’s remedy to the financial crisis – the Dodd-Frank legislation – was rammed through Congress into law before this commission had even completed its work or submitted its findings. It was a show pony of an investigation, but it did nevertheless contain one Peter Wallison, and now several years later he has come out to give us his thesis on what really caused the crisis, and why he could not go along with the Congressional farce.His thesis is, in a nutshell, that it was government housing policy that caused the financial crisis. No shocker there. He essentially uses data point after data point after data point to incontestably prove that (a) 31 million “non-traditional” mortgages came into the American economy by 2008 (NTM being the more important classification than the media’s love of the term “subprime”, as it combines where the real toxicity proved to be – in the combination of subprime with “Alt-A” – ‘alternatives to agencies’, or loans that didn’t mean the underwriting standards of Fannie/Freddie; these 31 million NTM’s were at the heart of the crisis; and (b) They were the direct result of government housing policy which created them into being; and (c) The mere existence of this massive bloc of troubled mortgages was bad enough, but the extensive effort to cover up their existence – to hide or suppress the real number of NTM’s in the system, – led to a very faulty climate for risk-taking; and (d) Efforts to continue legislating social mandates via government housing policy will continue to lead to economic instability and even repeated crises.That may have been a mouthful. It was certainly a mouthful to read his 361 pages of substantiation. But the basics of his conclusions are simple enough, and if left alone, not really problematic. There would have been no financial crisis without aggressive government mandates to increase lending where it did not belong, and that misguided belief that social policy could be administered through the economic experimentation of various lending mandates created an intensely malignant culture in the world of mortgage lending. Wallison further proves beyond any shadow of any doubt that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac did not merely get “caught up in the pursuit of ill-gotten gains,” as is often alleged, mostly as an attempt to even blame free market greed for Fannie/Freddie’s decidedly non-free market troubles. Rather, Wallison proves, Fannie and Freddie got heavy into the NTM world because they had no choice if they were o meet their government mandates. I have read a dozen critiques of Wallison’s work, and none of them dispute his raw data in this regard.So with a useful book on misguided government social/housing policy as a core piece of the financial crisis, why do I need to find fault at all? The problem I have with this mostly fine work is that Wallison is not content to trust his own contentions about the crisis; he decides to conclude something more than the truth of his own thesis requires him to conclude. For Wallison, it is not just that government housing policy was a key piece, or the key piece, or a sine qua non in this crisis. For whatever reason, Wallison felt the need to additionally conclude that all other contributors to what became the 2008 crisis were not contributors at all – not in a complementary way, not in a supplementary way, not in a toxic accelerant way – they simply should be dismissed out of hand. This conclusion is frustrating to a thoughtful reader, for it is highly unnecessary for one also convinced of Wallison’s underlying work, and because it is simply preposterous on its face. The lengths Wallison goes to in order to claim that Federal Reserve monetary policy played no role in fertilizing the 2002-2006 housing bubble is cartoonishly silly. Perhaps no segment of the book is more disappointing than his completely indefensible supposition that there was no material inter-connectedness in the financial system, and that the CDS problem (credit default swaps) were easily remedied by one financial institution just replacing the CDS from one defunct firm (say, Bear Stearns) with a CDS from another healthy firm (he goes so far as to say a homeowner just needs to replace a bankrupt fire insurance company with another, never stopping to consider that in 2008 the entire business of this “fire insurance” was dead on arrival, since all of the companies were in over their heads with them, no one trusted each other’s marks, and surely no one wanted to write what had just brought down another firm (Bear, Lehman, etc.). My frustration with Wallison’s reckless conclusions that essentially all was well in Bear and Lehman land is not just how completely and empirically wrong they are, but how unnecessary they were for this book. He decided to throw out the “perfect storm” hypothesis about the crisis – the one that says it was the cocktail of government housing policy, Fed monetary policy, Wall Street leverage, rating agency corruption, and all other such assembled theories – and rather than conclude that nearly every problem which has been diagnosed in the financial crisis autopsy has some validity to it, even if some more culpability than others, he decides to discard all the others in their entirety. And in doing so, I fear, he loses incredible legitimacy for his very legitimate basic thesis.The financial crisis would have never happened without the accelerated attempt of Washington D.C. to legislate social policy through housing policy. One of the results of this fatal government initiative was a non-traditional mortgage glut that surpassed 31 million in number. The accompanying and unsurprising problems that these non-traditional mortgages created were the source of the financial crisis, and to the extent that Wallison’s book carefully and academically defends everything the prior three sentences say, his book was a helpful and needed work for students of the crisis (and a society that says they don’t want it to happen again). But the story as told in the preceding three sentences is not the whole story, as those 31 million NTM’s were the critical mass of an inter-connected financial system that levered up on insanity. They levered up on human greed, and I don’t mean the Wall Street banker kind of greed that wanted a bigger bonus. The financial system levered up on the greed of Main Street, that a covetous purchase of a home you could not afford was a good and noble thing, and it was our financial system’s bet on Main Street that proved fatal. Lehman’s collapse did not cause the financial crisis; it was caused by the financial crisis. After reading Wallison’s book readers will understand that crisis even more, but they will not understand it completely.

This book is must reading for anyone who continues to believe more and bigger government is the solution to all our problems. Until our leaders/politicians are willing to own up to and be honest about their own mistakes rather than trying to hide them through spin, Washington does not deserve our trust and confidence. This book is methodically researched and written to show the root causes of the 2008 mortgage crisis. It makes clear Washington's own culpability in causing the crisis and that subsequent investigations covered that up. It also makes the valid point that until Washington is honest with itself about the causes of a problem, it will be incapable of legislating solutions to prevent them from reoccurring in the future. Dodd Frank was passed to carry out an political agenda and did not put in place laws that would have prevented the mortgage crisis from occurring in the first place.

They were pleased as punch that they undermined sound underwriting standards and forcibly spiked the housing demand. When everything came crashing down they blamed the usual suspects, wall street greed and lack of regulation. The hypocrisy is stunning.This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the 2008 crisis and the 2007 housing bubble.

About the Author

I recently picked up a digital copy of Wicked New Orleans while doing some research. I am a fan of Troy Taylor and have a few of his books, but this was the first of his "Wicked" genre I had read. I was not surprised by how well it was put together. The time line of events, starting with the establishment of New Orleans, to it's present day made it easy to follow. The historical information on the Vice districts and crime from the early part of New Orleans's history was fascinating and very interesting. Once I purchased it, I couldn't stop reading. Troy has a genuine flare for these types of books and I hope to collect more of his publications in the future!

The author cuts straight into the stories of the city in a way that is engaging and doesn’t waste a single sentence.

This book touched on several notable New Orleans historical places and debauchery. ..but could have done bc a better job of expanding on each and explaining how New Orleans came to be a place where you can drink 24/7 and where crime rates are so high...yet it remains a place of romance, intrigue, music, food, culture and beauty like no other place in the United States.

Always love reading NOLA history - so this one's another good source of a window into New Orleans past.

Have not finished it yet, but so far I love to read about my city.

A little light on the shock and awe factor in the sex ridden scandals of the new millennium. However, it kept my attention on The Big Easy and the corruption that prevails. New Orleans makes Vegas look like a McDonalds platy house.

Very well written, with a variety of topics, learned something new with the first chapter. Would recommend to anyone who is interested in the beginnings of New Orleans.

When I read this book for the first time I thought it was a history of skateboarding type book, but I was wrong. It is a book of stories about the people who made skateboarding history!! Keith Hamm did a great job writing this book. He uncovered info that I had never knew or even thought of. I am waiting for more from Keith Hamm especially about Jay Adams and more pool skateing. Yeah!!! Get a copy and read it for yourself. It is a good edition to a skate library. Team AM approved!!

This book is obviously written by someone who not only knows how to tell a good story, do a good interview, and find interesting people, it's really written by someone who KNOWS what he's talking about and knows how to translate it to others, this is a great book on skateboarding culture. The Jay Adams story alone is worth the price.

Finally a skateboard book that did it's research. Amazing photo's and a good read. This is definetly a must have book. It's nice to see skateboarders that have been true to the sport finally get some photo's in print. Skateboarding is a lifestyle to most not just a thing to do because everyones doing it. Keith really did his homework. Good job!

Holy crap, what a story. It’s often brutal and frightening, horrifying and ultimately thrilling. I could not stop reading because I got emotionally invested in Gray immediately, along with secondary characters. It took a little longer to warm up to him, once Darius was on the scene because he had to be pretty cruel in order to save Gray. I was asked about scenes of non-con; there are suggestive but mostly non-graphic passages making it understood what happens to different characters and just a few details about Gray are disclosed later on in the book. Mostly it’s visual evidence of violence perpetrated on the boys taken with Gray. Only one brief glimpse of forced oral is on-page. It’s used more to highlight how Gray’s mindset has been impacted by what he’s experienced and witnessed. There is a lot of graphic, non-sexual physical violence and killing.Darius and Gray become close rather quickly because all the action takes place within 3-4 days. There is one sex scene, totally consensual and more about comfort and solace for Gray but the attraction between him and Darius feels genuine. The story ends at a point where the action has stopped, Gray is free from his captors but a sequel is coming. It didn’t really feel like a total cliffhanger, but he has yet to be reunited with his family and friends. It’s also evident that Gray will need some serious therapy and that Darius has an interesting past that needs to come to light. Highly recommended but not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

I think this book works in blurb theory more than in the actual story.I was frustrated with the amount of telling in this book. While bad things happen to Gray we're told about it more than live through it with him. For instance, "Call me Bob", the bad guy that is in charge of Gray for months on his way to be auctioned....well, we never meet the guy. Never actually see anything he does to Gray. We just know that Gray was afraid of him because Gray muses about him in his head at times. The reader doesn't live through a single scene with Bob and Gray. (The only clue to any of the things that might have been done is a throw away thought near the end of the book of one of the things that Bob did to Gray but whether that thought had been there or not makes no real difference at that point).There is no sex in this book between Gray and Darius that is kinky or debasing or anything else, really. The one time they have sex, Gray imagines himself somewhere else and they have voyeurs but it's not the kind of sex being forced on the other boys and Gray is fully consensual and on board, almost pushing Darius to do it. The other boys have it bad - of course they do, they weren't secretly saved - but again, none of that is reader "lived" pain. It's all told pain. Visual pain. Imagined pain. Gray hears screams, Gray sees bruises, Gray sees blood, etc. The people on the boat are depraved but Gray is mostly isolated from anything but listening to them tell their gruesome, sadistic stories. Yes, there are a few depraved, murderous action scenes and all that changes Gray a lot - of course it does - but it's all missing something, somewhere to make a connection with this reader.I found nothing that would classify this a romance or erotica. There is absolutely no sexual chemistry coming from Darius toward Gray. None. Gray is too traumatized to be able to recognize sexual attraction too so it's mostly subdued on his part.The plan to save Gray changes a lot as most plans do which is fine but the end of the book, while maybe not technically a cliffhanger, is absolutely a cliffhanger. If you don't consider this a cliffhanger than this doesn't even end with a Happy For Now ending. It just ends. It ends with a lot of loose ends. even more questions and no resolution whatsoever to anything.

Rating: dnfDNF at 38%. This wasn’t what I expected. I expected it to be dark, especially at the beginning. I guess I was expecting that Gray would go through abuse and then Darius would buy him and rescue him, and they would deal with the aftermath. Wasn’t expecting Darius to heap abuse onto Gray. At that point, I’m thinking no way would I believe that Gray could actually be able to have true feelings for Darius. I read books to feel good and this one is bothering me and while that maybe okay for some, it’s just not for me. I don’t like to return books, but I’m returning this one.

I have collected a number of books on uniforms of all kinds over the years. The difference in quality between a quality product and rubbish has become clear to me, and this book is the former. It is simply superb. The book itself is a high-quality affair, with glossy pages, fold-outs, and a good binding. The content is also great; virtually all of the noteworthy costumes from the original trilogy are here. The format shows them to their greatest advantage. No one can quibble about the choice of models here, since the costumes are placed over appropriate but unobtrusive manikins.The text is also good; there are extensive interviews of the costume designers behind these films. They offer nice insights into the process. At times the choice of subject starts to cross the line from costume to make-up, but I don't think that anyone will object if Chewbacca's outfit or R2D2's is included.Many people might expect this book to be an extension of an earlier publication on costumes from the prequels. It's not; it is far superior in every way - not least of which is that it is a much more convenient size. If you collect books on uniforms, costumes, science fiction or Star Wars, this one should be on your shelf.

I was not disappointed upon opening my copy of Star Wars Costumes. Three great forewords by John Mollo, Aggie Rodgers, and Nilo Rodis-Jamero. Lots of informative text (much stuff I didn't know) about the costumes, and stellar pictures. Particularly love the gate folds. Vader's costume, for example, gets great coverage. And the photos were taken with an eye toward showing detail. Just perfect. I haven't read the entire book: I only got it today, but I knew at first glance this is top quality, destined to take its place among other great original Star Wars trilogy resource books like Rinzler's "Making Of" series and Star Wars Storyboards, just to name a few. This nice hardback book is long overdue, but we have it at last.

A fantastic book, perfect for any Star Wars fan, no matter if prop collector or not. You are immersed in the world of Star Wars screen used costumes, armors and suits, reading about their history, analyzing the minute details together with the author. A must have high quality book!

Star Wars Costumes The Original Trilogy is a great book about Star Wars Costumes from the OT. So many great photos taken from the Lucasfilm Archives of the Costumes from the original star wars trilogy episodes 4-6 from A New Hope aka Star Wars , The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi, The Photography of all the costumes is great the Luke Skywalker Jedi Knight Costume is my favorite of the costumes from the OT and the photos of it are great. Keep in mind not all the costumes shown in the book are in good condition remember their close to 37 years old and have some signs of rust on them but all it all they look great. Brandon Alinger did a great job writing this book and earns my highest recommendation. If also your a fan of the Prequel Trilogy of Episodes 1-3 check out Insight Editions Dressing A Galaxy that is a perfect companion to this book. Overall I give Star Wars Costumes The Original Trilogy a 10 / 10 across the board a great book on the Costumes of Star Wars a great book for any Star Wars Books Collection. The Force is Strong With This One.

Excellent reference book for any fan of the costumes of the Original Trilogy. Beautiful photography, intriguing background stories by the creators. And finally, clear and large shots of the A, B, and Y wing pilot uniforms from Return of the Jedi. You will not be disappointed.

Awesome book with good photos and nice concise prose. Is a bit odd that some of the pieces are not screen used but prototypes and the like. Not comprehensive for every character, I'd like to know if Lando was wearing some of Hans clothes at the end of episode v but no information. Also Hans gun belt is shown from episode vi but not v. I believe that piece exists because it's been seen publicly. But perhaps it was out on tour during the time the book was written. It's an excellent companion to "dressing a galaxy"

If you love the art of film costuming, get this book. If you love classic original Star Wars, get this book. This is a hefty book loaded with great photographs of just about every major costume used in the entire trilogy. The text is also a worthwhile read-- it's a great history of how these now-iconic outfits came into being. Note: Aspiring or seasoned cosplayers (or any future 501st Legion folks!) will find this tome invaluable as a reference source, as well.

This book is amazing. I cant believe it took me this long to get it. This is a must for any Star Wars fan, especially of the original Trilogy. It is packed with behind the scenes images and details of all the costumes and creatures. The panels are well laid out and some of the fold out sections are awesome. I would have loved more details on the bounty hunters from Empire Strikes Back and the denizens of Jabba's Palace in Return of the Jedi but they do cover them pretty nicely and it is cool to see the Cantina creatures out of their environment.
