This touches two fascinating subjects--wax sculpture as an art form, and anatomy books as a source of scientific information and cheap thrills. The first deserves more respect than it generally gets; Madame Tussaud's is barely the tip of the iceberg. The second is treated here mainly as a means to guilty voyeurism. (You will hardly learn anything about anatomy from this book, but the images of chopped-up women are jolting.) The book gives a nice coverage of the history of wax and anatomical art. Some features of the production did not appeal to me: Entire pages are devoted to boldface quotations, with legends too tiny for the human eye to decipher. (The first time I read the book, I didn't even notice the legends at all.) There is a wealth of historical photographs, but many are printed so small (commemorative postage stamp size) and at such low resolution that some of the history contained therein is lost. For an art book, try Alessandro Riva's book on Clemente Susini, which is stunning. ISBN 978-8889188972

Beautiful book, great shipping.

This is another beautiful book from Joanna Ebenstein and the Morbid Anatomy Museum.The book itself is well designed, well made, and includes nice touches like headbands.The photos and illustrations are of intriguing anatomical models that were widely used before the advent of photography. The detail on some of the models is astounding. Some of the models even include detail of the lymphatic system which is usually, even to this day, ignored.I was especially surprised to see a photo of a painting depicting the sculptor Jean Léon Gérome creating my favorite statue, Tanagra.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in medicine, anatomy, physiology, curiosities, art, etc.

Strangely delightful, The Anatomical Venus throws some light on what some may perceive as the darker corners of the boundary between science and popular culture.

I only give this three stars because I bought the ebook version and it's basically unreadable. Can't really zoom too well or view the images in the desktop reader, can't download it as a pdf to actually be able to inspect closely.

It's a bathroom book. It lacks depth.

Fascinating and beautiful book with superb pictures, but does not get a five star rating because the licture captions are so small I need a magnifying glass to read them, and even then some that are printed white on black are extremely difficult to decifer.

Modelling the genesis and propagation of electrical activity in the heart in quantitative terms is one of the most important recent applications of mathematical modelling in biology. The main research direction, and the most important for biological and medical applications, is the development of realistic models of electrical activity in cardiac tissue and the whole mammalian heart. Recent progress in nonlinear dynamics, advances in computer technology and experiments on cardiac tissue have made feasible the construction of such models. Computational Biology of the Heart is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of recent research together with a systematic overview of the subject. The contributions, all written by experts in the different areas of the subject, cover all main aspects of whole heart modelling: from excitation in single cells, to two and three dimensional models of cardiac tissue and the whole heart. Various computational models and techniques are described and then applied to reconstruct and visualise modelled activity in both normal and pathological heart tissues. The models are nonlinear and use techniques of ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and eikonal equations. The book also provides a review of modelling cardiac contraction, mapping electrical activity from electrocardiograms, and recent experimental observations of wave propagation in the whole heart. In her historical sagas such as 'The White Queen' and 'The Red Queen' and her Tudor works, women and gender relations are centre stage. In 'Earthly Joys' women's position is not neglected, but we are drawn into the life of a man whose loyalty to his master and a hierarchial way of looking at the world are examined.The novel did not resonate with me as immediately as Gregory's female centred works. However, Tradescant's period with William Cecil introduces the reader to the political wisdom of Cecil and Tradescant's own views as well as the development of Cecil's garden and, even his need to concur with his master, the king, when forced to relinquish his estate. With Cecil's death Tradescant acquires a very different type of master, and Gregory explores this period with with great sensitivity. Tradescant's last master, the king, comes into his life when he is beginning to question his adherance to hierarchy, echoing some of the views of his son, J.Elizabeth and Jane Tradescant, wives to John and J, present alternative views to John, and the usual feminist strand of Gregory's works is drawn through Frances, his grand daughter.The Kindle version of the novel suffers from poor editing. I is often used instead of J for John's son and this is disconcerting. However, despite this flaw, I was keen to read to the end and to reconsider my initial reluctance to become embroiled in a man's life instead of those of the female protagonists so familiar in Gregory's novels.

I love Phillippa Gregory, but I did not like this book. She introduced an entirely unhistorical sexual preference for the major charcter that was conjecture only. Without the unnecessary fiction, it was an interesting book

Tremendously enjoyable. Great to read Philippa Gregory with a male central character. Her knowledge of gardening, the history of garden styles in Europe and their evolution as the culture changes are marvelous. Rich characters and, as usual, awesome detail and style. Really excellent book. Read it.

Read in conjunction with Virgin Earth. A story of life during these times Cromwell/Charles, through the eyes of Royal gardeners, their trials and tribulations and struggle to remain loyal to the Court at the same time remaining true to their own values. Most enjoyable read. Their deep love and understanding of plants is the backbone of these two books.

I always have trouble with historical fiction because I like to know what is fact and what is fiction. Consequently, I hauled out books of the his History of England during the reigns of George the First and his son Charles and lo and behold fact and fiction matched. Even the main character, whom I had considered fictional, turned out to be the real gardener to those in power--in fact there are flowers named after him. So...history became more real to me thanks to Philippa Gregory's engaging fiction.

A must read after Dick Cheney's , In my time. Frank and candid. Interesting perspective from a daughter and a campaign staffer.

It seems that if one were to grow up in a family of wealth and power that they would have a positive outlook on life. Not so with Ms. Cheney. She spends almost the entire book telling about how mean people were to her on the campaign trail and whines constantly about the toils of politics.In addition, she missed a great opportunity to tell about the issues that confront an individual growing up gay in a conservative family. This along with the fact that the book must have been written by an 8th grader points to a poor read.I would give it zero stars if possible.

She is obvisous pulling punches and being edited. But it is still an interesting read as she attempts to explain her actions or lack there of.

I'm the mother of a lesbian daughter, and an activist who works for equal rights. During the last presidential election, I wondered how Mary Cheney was able to reconcile her sexual orientation and her loving commitment to her partner with a leading role in the reelection campaign of a political party that would write second class status into the U.S. Constitution for Mary, her partner Heather, and all other lesbian and gay citizens.The title, Now It's My Turn, implies some self-revelation of thoughts and emotions held back during the campaign for fear of jeopardizing her father's re-election. Instead (as other reader reviewers noted) the book's content is reflected accurately only by the subtitle: "a daughter's chronicle of political life." This day-by-day account of the vicissitudes of life on the campaign trail is competently, occasionally humorously, written, but not what I expected.For me, in fact, the book raises more questions than it answers. It's obvious that Mary Cheney is devoted to her father -- her depiction of him comes across as near idolatry. But were there NEVER any strains in their household? According to her, she came out to her parents while a junior in high school. Her father immediately told her he loved her and just wanted her to be happy. Her mother worried about the difficulties she would face in her life ahead, but came to understand that as a "secondary issue," once Mary "explained that my life would actually be much harder if I had to lie about who I was."From that point on, she describes both parents as totally supportive. And she seems angrier at Edward's and Kerry's mention of her orientation during the debates than by President Bush's support for the Federal Marriage Amendment, even though the amendment would not only bar same-sex marriage, but would also prevent both Federal and state governments from enacting any sort of domestic partnership or civil union law that would give unmarried couples any of the rights or responsibilities of marriage.It's not till page 173 that she even mentions the Federal Marriage Amendment, and then addresses the problems it caused her in the most cursory terms. She decided (after seeing an advance copy of the speech) not to attend the 2004 State of the Union address where Bush voiced his support for the amendment, but made up her mind to stay on as director of vice-presidential operations for Bush-Cheney '04 because she had made a commitment. And, more importantly, because of her strong belief in her father.Another reader reviewer, who describes herself as a lesbian from Colorado, commented that despite her (the reviewer's) support for equal rights, she was a Republican supporter because she believed that crushing terrorists was the most important issue, and that she saw this as Mary Cheney's position as well as her own. I do remember Cheney immediately thanking Edwards for his "kind words" about his family. But I never would have guessed, till reading it in his daughter's book, that Dick Cheney meant this as a kind of double-talk. That is, the Cheney family saw Edward's praise as a political ploy "that would remind everyone in the known universe, particularly those who might object, that I was gay." Cheney's thanks were intended solely to shut off any further discussion of this topic.I do remember Kerry's statement in the presidential debate very well. In response to the question, "Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?" Kerry said, "I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."I remember this so well because, as the mother of a lesbian daughter, I felt Kerry's answer was both good and sensitive. Perhaps he was "targeting" Mary Cheney -- as she claims -- and looking for any excuse to mention her orientation. It didn't come across that way to me. To me, Kerry was saying that lesbians and gays are ordinary people who are members of families, including families who are prominent members of the administration. By singling her out for mention, he was making the point that she had grown up in a loving, stable family, with mainstream values, and that nothing in her parents' way of life or child-rearing practices caused one of their two children to grow up gay.It seemed to me, further, that he was making the point that gay and lesbian people are not some strange species, but our children, or our siblings or our aunts and uncles. They are born with the inclination to find a loving relationship with someone of their own sex, just as some children are born with the inclination to use their left rather than right hands. It hardly seemed "a cheap and tawdry political trick," as Mary Cheney quotes her mother's response.I once read an article on writing that said many writers write to find out what they think, rather than to express their already formed thoughts. So it is with this review. I had expected to simply reiterate my opening thoughts that the book revealed little about the private Mary Cheney. But I find myself reaching a different conclusion. I think she does reveal herself. Despite being out in her previous employment and her spousal relationship, Mary Cheney's views in Now It's My Turn seem to bear a close resemblance to don't-ask-don't-tell. It's all right to be out as long as no one mentions it too loudly, or broadcasts that information. Her inner mindset seems driven more by political expediency than by self-acceptance or pride.It makes me sad.

This book lives up to half its title. It is, indeed, a chronicle of political life--of the everyday rigors of traveling on a campaign plane, wearing suits that don't show stains, and eating hotel club sandwiches. That chronicle is interesting--for about ten pages.But Mary Cheney knows why people are (or aren't, if the Bookscan numbers so far are accurate) buying this book. They want to see how she, a lesbian in a committed relationship, grapples with having worked for George W. Bush even as he used his opposition to gay marriage to win the election. The implication of the first half of the title--"Now It's My Turn"--is that we'll hear where she stands.We do, sort of, but it's a dishonest reflection. Her characterization of Kerry and Edwards as "bad men" because they mentioned her during the debates reads as more heartfelt than any criticism she may have for Bush and his position. She tells the reader she considered quitting over the gay marriage amendment, but after that her troubles with her own side seem to have vanished, replaced with vitriol for any Democrat. An earlier Amazon reviewer said she could have replaced the word "Democrat" with "devil" and the book would have read the same, and that's true.The book reads terribly, by the way. It's littered with the same phrases over and over; "Which, indeed, they did" and "It was exactly the right thing to do" come to mind. Invading Iraq, dissembling to the press, picking a speaker to introduce her father; everything was "exactly the right thing to do." As I said, not exactly a reflective book. Instead, we're treated to constant self-congratulation, down to such petty achievements as the Cheney family beating the family of the other VP candidate onto the stage following the debate and the quick thinking required to come up with a gesture to John Edwards (sticking out their tongues) that wouldn't draw attention to the family.This was Mary Cheney's one chance to make a real contribution to the nation, and perhaps to atone for her support of Bush. As a book, and as atonement, "Now It's My Turn" fails miserably.

If you only read one book in the next year and you care even just an iota about your health, you MUST READ THIS BOOK. After I researched the background of the author, there is no question in my mind that he IS NOT a charlatan, he IS very knowledgeable. I have always known that minimization of toxicity is a very important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. What I did not know is how pervasive toxicity is in so many things that affects our body. In some ways it is a bit scary to know that we are bombarded with chemicals that are carcinogenic, causes so many disfunctions in so many of our organs and systems, yet he provides a solution that does not leave you on the edge of desperation. It is akin to someone notifying you how and when a burglar is coming to rob your house; would you not want to know? Or would you rather say, if I don't know about it then I will not worry.

I purchased this book in preparation for a heavy metal detoxing and it has helped a lot it's quite informative I will be removing my amalgam filling's I needed a pre-detox & post detox & this book along with other research I have done will be very invaluable!!!

Most books on Dermatology I know have good pictures OR good text. This one has good pictures AND good (although brief) text. Furthermore, the conditions are arranged by the predominant sign (pruritus, alopecia, inflammation, etc.) which facilitates greatly finding the disease you are dealing with. On top, the authors frequently give you a list of the rule-outs you should consider in each case. Diagnosis of dermatoses is still difficult but, without this book, it might be impossible. Iowa State Press managed again to put out a great book at a small pice. Get it!

About the Author

Ricki Carroll, aka “the Cheese Queen,” is the author of Home Cheese Making and the coauthor of Say Cheese! She owns and operates New England Cheesemaking Supply Company, an online and catalog company for cheese makers around the world. She is a founding member of the American Cheese Society and the recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award. Carroll has taught home cheese making classes since 1980 and started the home cheese making movement in America. She lives in Ashfield, Massachusetts, and can be found online at cheesemaking.com.

Good source for beginners

I see some reviewers who point out that the book is rather short on recipes for butter and yogurt, which merit mentions in the book's title, but only get one short recipe each in the book. This pamphlet is actually made of short excerpts from Ricki Carroll's book "Home Cheese Making". Carroll has one or two additional recipes in her full book for yogurt and butter, but her book is mostly focused on cheese (the words butter and yogurt don't appear anywhere on the front cover of her full book). So, if you're looking for lots of non-cheese dairy recipes, you should get something else.And, in my opinion, if you're looking to get into making cheeses at home, Carroll's full book is a better deal. Sure, this pamphlet is cheap, but it's also only 32 pages. The full book costs more, but you get almost 300 pages of recipes and information.

for less than 4 dollars, the sourcing vegetable based rennet by picking plants (weeds) that are probably growing in the area of a half mile circle of your house is well worth the price. Several different cheese making methods are decribed with enough detail you can accomplish them the first time without major issues. with any new process, the more you actually do the method the better your results will be.

These bulletins are great for quick reference and easy gifting.

this is more a brochure than book. nothing you can't find by googling.

Nice and easy - no frills just helpful information for the novice. If you already have some knowledge of making cheese though you may not find this much helpful to you. It's great for us.
