Gass' The Tunnel, the tortuous pre-natal worries about Vasquez' unborn twin girls) proclaim that the story herein told will be primarily inspired by this loon. Imagine then, all manner of conspiracies, cover-ups, eternal ne'er-do-wells, the basic depravity of human nature and the specific Columbian fire in the blood that wrought years of bloody civil war following the assassinationsof Jorge Eliécer Gaitán in 1948 and of Liberal leader General Uribe Uribe in 1918. This story is beautifully woven and the words are beautifully put to tell a fascinating story within a story. The author cautions the reader that it is a work of fiction and not to make assumptions, but the events are nicely researched and lend themselves to a complete immersion and acceptance.
Definitely one of my best books for 2019...I wholeheartedly agree with all five star reviews of this novel. And no, I did not get it for free from anyone. I read a review in the New York Review of Books by Ariel Dorfman (January 17 2019) and decided to buy the book. Well worth it!
An engrossing tale of political conspiracy and the people behind the lies/mystery. When I say this book is a lot to take in I don't just mean in volume. I am not just talking page count. This book has so much going on....such complicated matters...such intelligent writing...it's exhausting but it feels worth it all. Every part of the story is a story that you have to pay attention to. This is not a book that you can breeze through. If you want a quick read this is not going to be that book unless you are well acquainted with political thrillers. As intimidating as all that may sound for someone newly diving into this genre....I say go for it. Take your time with it. Enjoy.The Shape of the Ruins by Colombian author Juan Gabriel Vasquez takes us through an intricate story through the most times harsh world of Colombian history. What has been previously explained by several reviewers as part novel, part memoir....I don't know enough of the author and any of his previous works to explain it any differently so I'm going with that. What I do know...before you begin to give this book a go, get situated, remove yourself from any noise, any distraction...and dive head first into the Colombian world both past and present. Atmospheric...rich in detail....most times jarring. You are about to get educated on what the streets of Colombia were and are today...interwoven with a historical tale of conspiracy at the hands of a corrupt government. In each instance, the matter of a second or third assassin is raised.The story settles into a rhythm, one assassination leading back to another, arriving over mid-way in at the heart of the story and one young lawyer’s search for the truth. What unfolds is a complex series of cover ups as the overarching questions, ones that plague all conspiracy theorists the world over—Who is pulling the strings? Who paid the hitman? –are explored.The Shape of the Ruins is a literary feast that brings the social fabric of Colombia past and present alive in all of its magnificent and inglorious detail.
