Loved reading about some of these people whose names were familiar to me as a young girl growing up. My uncle was a Newport City Commissioner during this time period. He retired from politics in the 80's.
Very interesting book about the crime and issues that I saw first hand by growing up in Newport along with many aspects of which I was unfamiliar. A must read for anyone from the greater Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area.
reading was great
I grew up in Newport and this book is so full of errors that the writers should be embarrassed to have published it. It is true that gambling, liquor, and prostitution were the main industries in the town, but their facts in many cases are totally wrong. Perhaps they should have tried to find some older people who lived during the 20's and 30's to interview or do some fact-checking. Their perception of a small city that allowed and even encouraged these vices is partly correct, but they neglect the fact that much of this was helped along by the "upright" godly people of Ohio who used it as their playground. All in all, the book was a great disappointment.

Great photos, in particular the images of the Newport Rolling Mill, however I was disappointed that the text about the Andrews Steel Plant strike and resulting Federal occupation of Newport did not include information concerning injuries or deaths resulting from the gun battles between Federal troops and citizens as described in the text.
This is a great book with much detail of Newport,Ky and what caused this city to become "wicked". Thanks to the authors who did this fabulous research.
Informative glimpse into the shady side of Newport, Ky. in its hayday. Surprising look into this crime filled small city in Northern Ky.
